I have a 2011 MCS manual, and I've been noticing in 6th gear at highway speeds (65-75 MPH) the car is revving at 3000-4200 RPM. This seems really high to me, seeing as every other car I've had has kept the revs down in top gear to save gas.

According to the trip computer, I get about 32 MPG (US) at highway speeds in top gear. This is surprisingly low considering I can get the same from my mothers 525it, which weighs so much more, has a much larger engine, and has nearly 60,000 miles on it.

I was wondering, for owners of any type of MINI (Cooper, S, Countryman, automatic, etc), in top gear, what RPMs are you running at at highway speeds of 65-75 MPH? What is your highway (MCS) gas mileage?

Given the above, at 65 MPH the engine would doing around 2700 rpm and at 75 around 3100. At 4200 rpm you'd be doing over 100 MPH.

MPH = R * 60 * 3.14159 * (W * P / 100 * 2 / 25.4 + D) / 12 / 5280 / G
R = RPM of engine
W = Width of tire
P = Profile (aspect ratio) of tire
D = Diameter of wheel
G = Gear Ratio​

Can you be sure you're in 6th? It sounds almost like you're in 4th. Would be useful to do an rpm check. Go to a predetermined speed in 4th, say 55mph, note rpm. Stay at 55 and shift to 5th, what's the rpm? It should drop. Stay at 55 and shift to 6th, what's the rpm? It should drop again. If it goes up, you're going into 4th. You haven't found 6th yet.

MINIAC, thanks for the figure, that helps, although I still wonder why I seem to be revving so high in 6th at 70 MPH. I can't seem to get any better than 32 MPG on the highway.

xviper, I'm in 6th, although it feels like 4th because the engine is revving so high and sounds like it needs to upshift, but I'm already in top gear. I can see why you would think I haven't found 6th, but I would be able to feel a down shift from 5th to 4th (it would lurch and rev way up), I'm definitely up shifting into 6th.

That's weird when you consider MINIAC's post regarding rpm and mph. As for the MPG, according to this:

A 2011 MCS 6sp manual should get about 27 city, 35 highway. So your 32 is at least in the ball park. My '05 Cooper auto gets slightly less than what that site says, too. Since it's an auto, I never really pay much attention to the rpm. All I can tell you is that at 50 mph, the tach is low 2000 (2xxx) in "6th".
You might, just out of curiosity, check the accuracy of the speedo with a GPS unit and check the tach with an ECU data reader (like a ScanGauge) if you can borrow these.

I have an '11 MCS and in 6th on the hwy it's running just about 3000 rpm at 70 mph. I am also getting around 37 mpg (US) with solid interstate hwy driving.

Thanks everyone!! Maybe I'm just not used to the engine noise of a four cylinder, as it's louder than the BMW inline 6s I've driven at those RPMs. I do love my car though!

Perhaps your clutch is slipping. This would be most noticeable in 6th gear at highway speeds. There is a fairly easy way to test this:

Drive at 50mph in 6th gear (the actual speed doesn't matter, but seems like a good starting point). Accelerate full throttle to 75mph-80mph, for example. Just before lifting off look at the rev counter. At the point of lifting off, does the engine speed slow suddenly, disproportionately to the road speed?
