and today done a b road run can now drive it at 1500-2000 revs everywhere just pulls like a diesel mid 40s mpg easy,, and bit better than the kicking it got the other day 29mpg , so would think on motorway at 55-60mph might make 50 ish done 400 miles now and used no oil and i mean no oil single catch can has caught nothing so far and rear breather pipe still clean and dry,, still got crud coming out of exhaust from its blow up and owner ever time use it come and wash the back off but it is getting better the first few days it would block the number plate off could not read it after 30 miles of running,, thanks to john at black magic performance centre for a bang on map and rolling road runs its just so smooth the power is there from 1000 revs to red line no hesitations or nasty running the idle is just totally smooth cant feel engine running on idle and when rev'd to be honest, YOU CANNOT BEAT ROLLING ROAD TIME AND BI SPOKE MAP,

if anyone is thinking of fitting the latest piston rings set with a flexi oil ring coated that is used on latest spec n18 and b series engines,, DONT DO IT . have found it effects the breather system is such a way that get zero pcv pressure and the n14 needs some blow past to function otherwise its will just fill your catch can up in no time on the over run,, and for me the next time i get a brain fart will just keep to what i know works,, either factory ring set or better still hepolite rings set and hone the bores with stones,, get rid of the low friction rubbish...so thats my weekend destroyed under the mini again lol..
when stripped will post pics of the offending items live and learn

Hi Mike

I wonder wether I can ask a couple of question? (As it seems you know your stuff)

I have a r56 with low compression on 1 cylinder is it worth just changing the rings on 1 cylinder or all 4 Or is it pistons as well

and where did you Get your pistons from?

thanks Larry

keep up the great work😊

you prob find yours as gone same way as this one did its common issue with them and number 1 or 2 ie gearbox end is number 1 on these engines,, i would only ever fit all new piston rings and conrod bolts as they are stretch bolts, also big end bearings as well and timing chain kit etc,, link below is what i used on this car as its my own car and trust the seller had a lot of stuff off them and always worked out well,, you must also hone the bores as shiny bores are part of the issues also do away with factory piston rings sets they are rubbish been seeing b-series bmw engines with eating oil issues due to coated plastic rings,, will list all parts i used below anything under this level wont end well to be honest,, it right fiorst time mine has done 2000 miles now used 1/4 litre of oil is running 230 bhp at crank 206bhp at wheels i drive 3000 revs and above most of time as they dont like low revs its glaze's the bores etc,,
ALSO MUST DO VALVE STEM SEALS AND CLEAN OUT INLET VALVES PORTS ETC,
piston
big end bearing
chain kit head gasket head bolts and valve stem seals,
rings
valve spring compressor,,,THIS IS BEST TOOL FOR THESE HEADS GOOD CONTROL AS COLLETS ARE TINY, USE VASLINE AND DENTIST SCRAP TOOL TO INSTALL THEM AND MAGNET TO REMOVE THEM, I HAVE GOT 3 KINDS OF VALVE SPRING TOOL AND THIS CHEAPY ONE IS BY FAR THE BEST,,,
10pc Valve Spring Compressor Kit Universal Set Cars Motorbikes | eBay
brake cleaner to clean things and to clean head and block surface just before throwing head back on MUST BE OIL FREE CLEAN, alsio use scotchbrite
below link cheap hone tool use wd40 when degalze the bores ,, these engines take fast drill 3 minutes each then 2 minutes very slow as to get 45 degrees lines up the bores for best results,,
the conrods bolts and camshaft bolts are main dealer only,, always use loctight on conrods bolts,,
all pistons and end caps MUST BE NUMBER AND DIRECTION MARKED CANNOT USE A END CAP OFF ANOTHER ROD ETC,, THIS IS IMPORTANT FAIL HERE AND WILL SEE A ROD OUT SIDE OF BLOCK,, AFTER REBUILD FIRST START LEAVE CAR ON IDLE FOR A GOOD HOUR LET THINGS SETTLE IN,, some pic below of my latest victim a fiat abarth this had 30,000 miles driven by old lady never rev it much glazed the bores and stem seals went hard burning oil badly,, not just mini engines
i also put grease on valve stem seals and valves when putting back together prevents the rubber seals getting hurt form being
