Abnormally loud turbo spool up at low revs- R56 JCW 2013

I was out on a drive yesterday and after driving quickly on some country roads I noticed the turbo was making a strange noise. I could hear the turbo spool up a lot louder than before (almost sounded like a jet engine) and it would do so at low revs ~ around 2000 RPM. I drove extremely carefully back home and am waiting to take it into a garage. I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas about what this could be? There are no warning lights so I am hoping it is nothing major and maybe just a loose intake hose or something? Thanks for the help!

turbo failing, take off the intake pipe and see how you can move the turbine manually, if you look in the end you might see the blades fouling the housing which is typically where the niose comes from, or something perhaps has got into it distorting blades, the inner intake sleeve can do this sometimes

Unfortunately I am a bit busy with work at the moment. I have taken it to a local garage and they have quoted it as £1600 for replacing the turbo... is this a fair price?

I refresh a engine for a lot less lol,
have seen many of them fail due to the intake pipe from air filter to turbo inlet the plastc goes hard and brittle then someone comes along an over tightens the pipe and cracks it then it breaks up and gets ingested in to turbo pics below one a done a while ago,

this one i fitted a £180 chra plus around 4 hours and rebuild turbo myself, most garages wont do that

depends on the parts in the quote etc, probably a full new turbo with oil and filter plus air cleaner such are the terms of some turbo warranties, maybe for one through euro car parts, maybe it's a genuine one but likely not as the figure will include the work to get to that point as well as the bits mentioned, my guess is it's a factor part which might be still an OEM item just sourced for less
