Buying a gen 2 Countryman All4. It started making a loud knocking noise on pick up, dealer took it back and diagnosed missing teeth on the external belt. Dealer replaced the belt and says it was just wear on the belt - 39k miles, 8 years old.

Can the belt (left hand side of the engine) just fail like that or is it likely there is another problem that broke it?

Would really appreciate thoughts.

belts are rubber, rubber breaks down with age not so much mileage,, ie a 200k car that was 2 years old the belt would prob still be ok, 8 year old one just start to crack and fall apart, hope they replaced the water pump rubber coated pulley at same time if have not make them do it as this wont be far off being the same way,
this is why on timing belts on other engines they say 100k or 5 years must be changed as rubber cracks with age

@mike1967

Really appreciate your feedback - we decided not to go ahead with the purchase and instead bought another All4 at a different dealer.

Sorry it took so long to reply, I couldn't figure out how to reply from mobile!
