Newbie here with a 2012 Cooper D, just upgraded from a much tweaked with mondeo ( started life as a basic spec poverty mobile & got upgraded over the years to most of the higher spec toys as & when they came up in scrappers etc - much simpler beast though was that, bolt in the new bits, add the missing wires & the occasional fuse & so long as you connected the wires up right the stuff worked :D )

the mini though seems to be an all new beast thats not as easy to add bits to :(

managed to pick up a mini with most of the creature comforts i had gotton used to after adding them to my old mota ( cruise control, climate control, leather interior ( heated of coarse ) door puddle lights, walk-me-home lights bluetooth hands free etc ) but sadly there was a few bits that were missing that i really do miss, alas i wont be adding them all as the heated front screen would be a nightmare to add i would imagine lol but rear parking sensors & auto dipping rear view mirror are on the cards, already got the bits, just need to wire the dipping rear mirror up ( its in the car just fine & dandy after a £10 delivered bargain off ebay - normally about £30-£40 from what i have seen since getting the mini ) just missing the ignition live power & the reverse undimming feeds in my mini :( - it does dim & undim perfectly outside the car as tested on a battery i had kicking round.

the reverse sensors i have awaiting are one of them electromagnetic kits so there will be no drilling & such to spoil the looks of the rear of the car, i just need a better indicator to stop me looking like a right prize prat when reverse parking as when using the mirrors i stop as it looks like i am about to hit whatever is behind, i get out & i am like 5 feet away from the objects behind ( yup, the old car was also an estate so that may not be helping matters here )

so onto my question ( finally )

where is the best place to pick up a 12v ignition live feed to power the mirror ( ie which fuse to pull & replace with an add-a-circuit adapter etc unless you know of a supplier of the proper retro-fit cable as its No Longer Available from MINI or anywhere that i can find now & i cant find any info on the connector size i would need to make a wire go in the OEM locations ( both at the mirror & the fusebox - also there'sno R56's currently in the scrappers i use so cant clip off a few inches of loom either end add make my own looms that way etc )

& also a 12V+ reverse light feed ( from what i can gather, the OEM retro-fit guide states to use a location thats powered from F32 to do the reverse undimming but that appears to be the OEM parking sensor location & the retro-fit guide also states the need to program the car to use said location ( without the programming the reverse undimming does nothing it seem from many others who have done the mod with the oem retrofit cable ) so i need a feed thats already active like the existing reverse lights ( trouble is mine are in the rear bumper beside the foglight, so no easy pickup point at the rear light clusters i would imagine - i know some other R56 models have reverse in the rear light cluster in the car itself instead of in the bumper :( - i am hoping i am wrong & there is a handy wire to tap into at the rear light cluster too as it would make both mods much easier if there is :D

any help on completing these mods would be a great help

( & if there is such a source of info i would be greatful if it could be posted or at least a link to the existing thread on such, Full Fuse & Relay rundown for the 2012 era R56 Gen 2 Mini - found the Gen1 based post on here but not yet found an R56 based one :( - haynes manual aint no help either, it lumps the reverse lights in with the rear tail lights & just shows a random array of fuses, switches & bulbs all getting wired upto the brainbox which does all the magic & it does not label what fuse does what task sadly :( )

newtis.info has all the wiring diagrams. Don't quote me but the reverse detection should already be prepped on your motor (as in the reverse lights know you are in reverse). Your mirror might even be plug and play, have you tried it yet? Anyway, there is a 12v feed up there as it is also the aerial for your key remote and should be constant 12v unswitched as always monitoring for key.

also, access to the wires to the reverse lights is quite easy, just remove the plastic panel inside the rear of the boot, it is held with clips.
many thanks for the reply's, will take a gander at the wiring diagram link you mention soon - seen many similar site references on googled forum posts but non of them have still been active so will be nice to finally find one that works as got a few more ideas from my old mota i would like to see if they are possible in the mini too but need diagrams to see where to start poking n prodding 1st lol ( ie, getting the front & possibly rear maplights to come on along with the main roof cabin light when you open the car door for better lighting - done via the use of diodes in the old car hoping for similar in this 1 as the front maplights really do help light the car up at the front etc - already gone full white LED lights in them all - had them in the old car & happily they fit in the mini too )

yes, the mirror is already in the car, central locking remote still works but no dimming, looks good though without the bump under the mirror now :D

but nothing doing in the car at all with regards wiring in pins 1 & 3 locations so gotta add them myself thus the question on where to power from :(

i have seen many references to using pin 8 on the mirror to power the dimming but as you say, its an ALWAYS live feed for the central locking remote antenna & i dont fancy coming out to the car one day to find a dead battery, on occasion i can leave the car for a good few days - in nicer much warmer weather maybe upto 2 or 3 weeks without use etc as i would commute by pushbike instead so a switched live is required sadly ( on my previous car i grabbed the perm live for the interior light to power the dimming mirror, it was not an ignition switched live, but it had the advantage of getting disconnected from the battery via a relay after 15 minutes of the car being inactive in order to save the cars battery & thus it was suitable for use to power the mirror - dont know if the mini does the same or not & if it does fantastic, which wire to grab hold of etc :D )

i know reverse detection is OK ( the reverse lights come on fine, a second or 2 after selecting reverse but they do come on - kinda like the headlights take a second to switch ON & OFF after that selection is made too lol ) but from what i have seen on many other forum posts via google, the F32 fused OEM retrofit option for reverse light power feed is NOT active when in reverse unless you already have OEM parking sensors & needs to be activated via the diagnostics port etc ( i dont have the tools for that, got a basic code reader but not a programming one :( )

as for the already active reverse light feed in the boot, will that still count on my car as i DO NOT have reverse lights at the rear tail light clusters, my mota's reverse lights are in the rear bumper beside the foglight?

well, halfway there now, its powered & working, just not wired to a reverse light feed ( & might not ever be either if i find i dont need it, only time will tell.

in the end used an Add-A-Circuit fuse adapter in F44 ( the accessory socket fuse on 2009+ - F42 before 2009 aparently ) so its ignition live & plenty big enough circuit to handle the extra load of the mirror without breaking a sweat :D ( the mirror does have its own 2A fuse on that circuit along with the ciggy sockets 20A in the adapter doo-hicky

went for a spin as it started turning dusk & my god, what a difference it makes to driving comfort when someone is driving behind let alone when they have misaligned lights or full beams on, i honestly dont think it made this much difference in my last car, but then my last car was not as low as the mini lol
