Anyone running 18" wheels?

2245 Views 17 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Blue Thunder
I have a Cooper S due next month, and plan to run OZ superleggera's 18x7 with 215/35/18's

Am I nuts? I plan on having the wheels sitting in my garage before I even take delivery! :p

I also plan to install spax coilovers and Rogue Engineering exhaust from the get go as well.

yea im running 18in 215/35 momo quasars, with the mota lowered 30mm all round,no probs although camber goes off at back which is effecting the left inner tyre!
Soungs Good... got any pics

I'd be interested in seeing your setup. When you say the camber is affecting the rear... do you mean the tire is rubbing the fender?

Also is your suspension fixed height or threaded adjustable?

Lowering the rear ride height is not as important to me as to reducing the chassis roll.

I think I may have a better line on a set of H&R coilovers at this point as opposed to SPAX.

I'll be collecting all my mods in the coming weeks. I definately think the anthracite Superleggeras on pure silver will look killer.
I'm sporting wood...

That settles it... I plan to have my 18's all ready to go before I even take delivery :D

Here's a quick photoshop job of a light silver with the anthracite OZ superleggera's.

Looks Killer! Question...

Is that the stock height suspension?
springs

The car has spax springs which i think drop the car 30mm lower than the ss+ springs which come with the chilli pack. The aero body kit goes on tomorrow as well

We have 18" wheel on Blue Thunder. Everything seems to clear. As far as the suspension kit goes, I have a coil over kit arriving soon. But, I wouldn't want to guess right now if we will have any clearance problems. Click here to see 18" wheels
I am sorry man... but that just look plain stupid to me. Especially with those black plasic arches.

(Seriuosly - it look bug ugly!)

IMHO!
Be nice...

Come on... be nice and clarify...

Are you talking the body kit or the combination of the body kit and wheels?
Don't hold back

Hey ADO15, Now don't hold back!! You won't hurt my feelings. No need to beat around the bush! I'm sensing, that you don't really care for my car!

The only thing that someone may find offensive. Is calling my car BUG ugly. What you meant to say was BUTT ugly. If you say BUG ugly, you could be offending some very sensitive people on the Volkwagen Forum.
Here check out these BBS, maybe you like those better???

Blue,

I agree. They'd look MUCH nicer on my Dark Silver. Can I have the set you dont use? :) I had a 1966 Sedan (Bug) and i wont be offended as long as I get wheels.

I'm glad this is on the internet. I would hate to be driving my car through Norway and have the locals start throwing stones at my car because they don't like the wheels.

I'm not even going to show him my hand made 1 spoke ultra light weight forged mahogony racing wheels.
No telling what he'll say!!:)
Enough of this wheel nonsense. I have a new oil cooler kit, coming up, any interest?? Also a front stress bar. And cold air intake.
Like I said: *In My Humble Opinion*

To me those wheels look atleast one size too big. But thats me - I'm even having second thoughts about the 17" wheels I just ordered for my own car..

I also think the "huge" plastic arches look extremely "DYI bolt-on"... this is probalby because

A: I've had my own colour coded and now - when-ever I see a Mini with the black - original - plastic, I think it look funny.

B: Because there is no black palstic on the sills, it make the wheel-arches look very exaggerated (sp?)

C: The light shade of blue colour on the car make things even look worse than it is because it allow the black bits to dominate the picture so much that it "throw" the whole design of the car - "off balance".

D: Too me, handling is more important than looks... I generally like my cars to handle well instead of loading them up with all sorts or "rice-racer" 'jalla' bits.

E: I simply just dont get this obsession with big rims and no rubber. It makes the car handle like crap and it look like a joke. Wheels are supposed to have some rubber on them, just as rear-lights are supposed to be red! :)

Again, like I said before - this is *my* opinion.
And rest assure - there's no need to to stay away from Norway - there's plenty of "rice-racer wannabees" up here that simply adore all the stuff I dislike so there should be no problem ;) ;)

Thank, that sound a whole lot better.
Now, the tires on those rims are 225/35/18 and the reason they look small is the hugh gap between the fender and tire. But the overall diameter of the 225/35/18 tires is larger than the factory 17" "S" tire. So the problem is worst on the original tire set up. As I said in my post, I'm waiting for a set of coil overs from my supplier FK Automotive WWW.FK-automotive.de FK automotive This will make some of the gap go away. Next, your right, I don't like the black plastic fender trims either. It makes the car look like it has an add-on unpainter fender kit. But that's the way they make it, They are all that way!! And the reason that Mini did that was it gives the car some parking lot door ding protection. Many car manufacturers are going with plastic protection flares, and trim pieces. Now once you paint them you leave yourself open to getting those door dings on your paint job. I do have a second set of fender flares, our plan is to make a wider flare kit that will be painted body color.
If you look at one of my other projects, I'm into performance also. Probably more than most people (See my other car)
I don't like the rice Burners either, But until I figure out how to make the Mini "S" go faster, I'm not going to say much about rice burners. Some of those cars are getting over 300 H.P. with a turbo. And they have about a 10 year head start in the performance market over the mini.

Now if you watch blue Thunder over the next few months, I think there will be some stuff you will like!! :)See Blue Thunders Home

By the way, I like Norway ,Sweden, Denmark, In 1972 I spent part of the summer in that area, and now that I know its safe to go back, I'll probably go again. :)
