I notice my 2011 SD could do with discs. I looked on Euro car parts and see they have Brembo drilled/grooved and thought they look nice and sporty.

Is it worth the extra cost, are they any advantage to fitting them.

What discs would you recommend.

brembo are good products grooved and drilled and grooved discs help the pads bite and clear dust and extra metal surface within the holes improves removing heat off the surface where the pads bite,, if you add EBC pads its will change the brakes a lot,

All the sites I look at list a 280mm disc and a 294mm.

Without taking the wheels off and measuring how would I know.

go to europarts and stick your reg number in parts finder and go to brake discs see what they list for it. what year and model is yours

That's the problem, Euro and GSF list 280mm (Vehicle Equipment- For vehicles without sports package) and lists 294mm. for vehicles with sport package.

Mine is a LCI model 2.0SD which I understand to be "Sport Diesel.

give them your reg number on messages or phone them, failing that then drop wheel off measure it. me i would drop wheel of and measure it for piece of mind, nothing worse than having wrong parts and car in bits

Phone a main dealer and ask them? Don't need to buy anything. I'm not a Gen 2 person but as far as I'm aware all R56s use the 280mm discs except for the Cooper S. Which has 294mm. I know this because us R53 people fit the R56 S front brakes set up to our R53 Cooper Ss because the standard 276mm are fairly useless. I have exactly that fitted to mine.
But I'm not sure what an 'SD' counts as. What is different to a standard 'D'. Is it a diesel S or a normal D with a few sporty bitzas. Don't know.

To your question, yes I think some drilled and grooved with decent pads will give improved braking feel, plus they do look nice.

I've joined friends in having drilled discs on previous cars and they've always suffered from cracking. Cracks form between the holes, until you end up with a dangerous web, looking like a molecular structure... cue premature replacement.

The idea of holes and grooves are much the same - the pad and disc are kept apart by a bed of gases. Grooves and holes both allow these gases to escape more quickly, resulting in more efficient braking.
Holes do a better job of cooling the disc, but as said, can crack up. Grooves are initially excellent at reducing gases but they can block up with compacted dust.

Neither are much of a thing from the manufacturer. You can buy a car that costs more than a house, with huge brake discs, but they're plain. There's something to be said about that.

From the RealOEM parts diagrams all 2011 SD's have 280mm discs.
In theory any removal of brake disc swept area reduces the braking effect but in practice I don't think you would notice it. Also drilled holes help cool but this can lead to cracking as MikeyMK pointed out. Groves help cooling but don't really have any down sides. Grooved and dimpled seems to be getting more popular. So drilled holes are the weakest according to that theory but what do Porsche use? Drilled holes on a GT3 for example. I suspect it is down to disc quality and/or the right disc size to cope with the heat. Brembo are good quality so you should be fine. 280mm discs are quite small for the SD so I would upgrade to the 294 (and calipers) or spend more on the Brembo's if you can't afford the size upgrade.
