I was just told that the O2 sensor after the catalytic converter is bad. My 2002 S is long out of warranty and its a US$300+ fix ($265 for the part).

Am I doing any harm by running the car with a bad second oxygen sensor? The car seems to be running fine and I could grow accustomed to a glowing SES light for that price.

Thanks for your thoughts.

There are sensors out there for track use that go before and after the cat-replacing straight pipe, and I believe Mini Mania carry them. What they do is send back a signal indicating all is ok before and after the cat. I don't know the price, but it won't be as much as OEM.

So the shop (not the dealer, but an authorized BMW/Mini shop) updated the software on the car <after> diagnosing the "bad" O2 sensor, and now that the software is updated, the SES light has gone out!

Is it possible that the problem was a fault of the car's old software and the O2 sensor is working just fine? This is very strange indeed.
