Why not buy the roof rack and 2 bike carriers for around £230 including postage from Woodman's?

the way i understood about roof racks on mini is that you need to spec it from new as it fits into specially cut groves in the roof channel .I also need it to be able to fit a number of different minis as there are 3 in my household and we are planning on using the different cars each time we need to use the rack.
thanks

Not sure this is true. The factory fit roof rails for the clubman are just that and different from the roof rack which does fit into the roof channel apparently they are fiddly to fit I'm not sure if there are plugs for when you take the roof rack off. I suggest you speak to Woodman's (and I'd be interested in what they say)

If all the Mini's you have are R56's, they're all pre drilled, so you don't need to spec when new - they're located under the gutter cover which requires cutting in two places each side. The rack comes with plugs to cover the cut outs when not in use, but you'll need a few sets if it's for more than 1 mini. I'm hoping to get one soon too.
I have a boot mountable bikerack, which was purchased when I had a R53 but have since got the R56 - factory JCW with the rear spoiler.

I have tested out putting the rack on and the straps pass under the spolier to locate on the top of the bootlid and the bottom ones to the bottom of the bootlid, and tighten straps. No problems on fitting - a 5 minute job - rack seems pretty sturdy.

One thing I do is put some fabric/foam or even cut up small bike tyre sections under the straps/hooks which join bodywork to prevent any marking.

The rack I have at present I think is called 'Saris Sentinnel' and hold 2 bikes, I think it was about £60 - although I get good discount from my bike shop and paid £35.

Hope that helps

Hey Jason,

I didn't think you should attach rear mounted racks to the top of the boot door on the R56's... The problem is that the spoiler and the panel beneath the spoiler are connected to eachother but that panel is separate from the rear boot skin. I don't know if that spoiler panel is strong enough to take the weight of bikes?! It may be worth checking - could be an accident waiting to happen, and nobody wants that.
Matt

Thanks for the warning - I will look into it.

So are you saying that if you remove the rear spoiler - as in the 5 screws underneath - then there is no bodywork above the rear window. Hope you understand what I mean!

I know when I got the JCW I checked compatability on saris website and all appeared OK.

As yet I have only put the bike on to test the sturdyness - so not driven anywhere, but last thing I want is to see my carbon road bike falling off the back as driving along and getting crushed under the unsuspecting car following:aargh:

There is bodywork, but the skin is beneath the spoiler panel. So the spoiler is attached to the outer body surface which is attached to the door skin... I only know this because I've seen a couple of Mini's driving around with only the door skin showing! Whoops!

I used to use a modded Halfords Rack which worked perfectly on my R50 MCS after bending the metal bars so that it fit through the spoiler opening (the gap). But after seeing the R56's skins showing - I never tried using it on my R56! Surely there isn't enough strength in an attached panel?

Thats the scariest feeling! It wouldn't be so bad if it was just the bike falling off - but could cause deaths too, and of course damage to your Mini!!
Matt thanks very much for that warning.

I had a look into it today while cleaning car and I see what you mean.

It looks as though the spoiler is attached to the bootlid directly at a quick glance, but yes there is a gap between the black spoiler support and the blue of the bootlid skin with what looks like a seperate piece of plastic between the 2.

I guess that could be the reason you have seen many with this part missing as like me when testing it out it appears different to what is actually there.

I looked into how to modify the metal hooks but not a good idea in my opinion now, as the actual bootlid is a fair distance from the spoiler base so reshaping the hooks to that extent will weaken the actual bike rack connecting points.

Very glad we had a bad winter now as that stopped me from getting out and about using the rack.

Oh well will have to look into other ways to transport the bike now.

No problemo!

I too doubt you'd be able to successfully modify the grip bars to that extent - I didn't even contemplate it TBH. Just gotta save £230 for the R56 roof mounted rack now!
