Boot refusing to open

Help! This morning I put my sons school bags and my handbag in the boot of my 58 plate Mini Cooper diesel (R56). On arriving at his school I found I couldn't open the boot with either the boot switch or my key fob! ,y son had to go to school without his bags and I still can't access the boot. I know there isn't an emergency cord in the newer R56 models and just wondered if anyone else has had this problem and solved it? Thanks

I've got a convertible so I don't have experience of the standard coupe, but can you not fold down the rear seats to gain access?

For the key fob it needs to be a long press on the button.
