Brakes Pre-11/06

I’ll read many threads on brake upgrades on this site but am still a little confused.
So can anyone please answer the following, which relate:puzzled: to my Cooper S registered 04/04 with JCW tuning kit?
Without any drastic mod’s what can I do to upgrade the brakes using BMW/JCW parts i.e R56 upgrades.

1) Is the only answer JCW brake Kit upto 06/06 part no 34110393455?

2) Can I upgrade with any combination from the R56 S brakes as a straight swap?

Any views/comments much appreciated

From reading the thread here it appears you can use R56 MCS brakes on a MINI built prior to July 2006, but you need to use R56 brake lines and make slight modifications to some mounting brackets.

You can also use better quality brake discs such as Tar-ox! Would also recommed Mintex M1144 pads.

Miniac thanks, its the "slight" mods that concern me it seems from my understanding that all the mods are post 06/06 or 06/011
Regarding the modification on a 2003 MCS:
ok, they are on!

one SLIGHT issue, EASILY resolved. the R53 brake lines fit into a slot on a bracket where they attach to the metal line. the hole it fits into is shaped like the end of the line. the R56 line has a different shape. it was easily remedied by filing two small notches on the inside of the braket on the body. here is what i'm talking about:

that is looking straight at the end of the hose where it fits through the metal bracket. it is not to scale because i only had to file two notches inside the bracket to get it to fit, and from my drawing it looks like you would need to file four. anyway, it's very simple and took me 30 seconds with a 3/16 round file.
Thanks Miniac for the link its answered all my question, cheers
I've wondered about this retrofit as well.

One thing that concerns me is that I have R84 wheels and this is what the NAM member had to say about them:
i have my 16" X-lites on there now. there is about 3mm clearance (1mm when the stick-on wheel weights go by) between the caliper and the inside of the wheel. so check to see if it clears your weights before taking off down the road.
I'm running 17ins so shouldn't have that problem, just got to cost in the set-up from the R56 S set-up versus buying the R53 S JCW sports brake kit

If you have to buy the R56 parts new, it's cheaper to buy the JCW Brake Kit ;)

R53 jcw kit costs-in then, thanks and also add rear brake pads to total, which are included in the JCW kit , also been quoted £570 for the JCW kit by "woodmans" so sounds the right option.
Its interesting my local dealer is showing a kit to fit R53 with ventilated perforated disk MINI Dealer Online Network
(i'll ignore the fitted price) but recall mentioned on Mini2 site somewere, but cant find it again that JCW kit now comes with these disk... so just have to wait for some fine weather
The ventilated perforated front discs (pn 34116777826) are slightly more (78.25 GBP | 113.00 USD) than normal ones. The holes in these discs are slightly larger to accommodate the M14x1.25 wheel bolts used from July 12, 2006 onward, but they can be used on cars with M12x1.5 wheel bolts. The part number for the JCW Brake Kit containing these discs is 34110446010.

Have done some ringing around, seems that both are now listed as the same price (quote from one main dealer) and was quoted from same "offer price" of £505, double checked on price, will confirm once got parts in my hand ! :D

I've always wanted some works brakes for my '04 JCW. Now i have a bit of cash :D i am looking to get some asap.

Was thinking about these new 4-pot ones but seems alot of fiddling to make them fit the standard 17" wheels and as i don't do track work just seems a bit excessive for my needs.

ModNMini are quoting £850 for the R53 drilled and crossed kit. Very interested in where you are gettting quotes for £505 from :):)
£505 is a bargain, but I guess you will have to paint the rear calipers yourself.
Just placed my order R53 S JCW sports brake kit £505, Part Number 34110446010with "Wollaston Mini" Northampton. Not sure if its a one off or going to be repeated at this price, but i'm "quite" happy! :D:D:D

Hi

Did you get the R53 kit with drilled and slotted discs?
I was going to order the same as you today but Chris at Woodmans says the kit with drilled and slotted discs is for cars built after 2006, as the later cars have 14mm wheel studs so you can't use these discs on earlier cars:(.

This is the R56 kit as DOES fit the R53 the fact that the stud hole is larger does not matter.
From all the research I’ve done it seems that they will fit as “snowie” has stated. I think that as its not the “official” part for an early R53 an official mini dealer might fall foul of their masters at BMW if they openly promote the slotted disc set up, they may also be worried about liability if anything goes, wrong brake failure etc. I’m sure you would never get a main dealer fitting these to a car they are not listed for, (please anyone correct me if I’m wrong) That’s why I’ve in the end gone with this set-up and not anything from the R56 range, and I don’t do track days so it should be sufficient for my needs. It was the same when I was having my JCW conversation fitted at the John Cooper garage and we talked about non run-flat, I recall they were very wary about endorsing the change over, but I notice they were running their cars with non-runflats and if it was good enough for them, I converted and I’ve never had any problems. I even found a space saver spare from a VW which fits in the boot, not sure if its going to fit with the new brake set-up though.

I have just picked up these calipers marked Brembo BMW P4.38 and wish to fit them to my R53 mcs which size discs will fit them R53 size or both that and R56 size ?

Those calipers require 316mm front discs.

You need to check if these brakes are compatible with the wheels on your MINI:

:readme: FAQ: Can all OEM wheels be fitted to either generation MINI?
