An unfortunate argument with a tree when reversing left part of the plastic bezel broken off (unfortunately I was not able to retrieve all the pieces so can't simply glue them back on). My local garage tells me that I need a complete new wing mirror at a cost of £300 for the part + fitting.

Is this really correct and is there no alternative ?? Is the plastic bezel detachable and replaceable if I could find a spare, and is there any there any chance I could pick up (on Ebay or elsewhere) a mirror that is being thrown out to salvage a bezel (if relevant I am in NW London) ?

That isn't a fit on bezel or trim you have broken, it's the actual mirror main body so replacement is needed. However I'm sure you can find a used one.

Ebay, as you have already mentioned.
salvage / scrap merchant, logically.

ID your vehicle model variant to get it right from the outset bearing in minds the generations, (you didn't fill in details)

if it is merely cosmetic (ie your mirrors function as intended) you can take your time & seek out the best price currently.
