Burning smell, 'smoke' and fan comes on

Hello Mini 2 community! I hope against hope i could find some 'intel' on this bizarre problem.

Here's the facts: Mini Cooper SD 2011 -- 80,000 KM Manual.
Purchased used in 2015 from a dealer

Every once in a while, although more often as time goes on -- if the car has been sitting for a while this happens, and even it's just overnight it still happens. Not everyday, but the frequency is now about once a week.

I'll be driving along, then suddenly smell, this very acrid odor, and then see 'vapor' come up from the hood. No warming lights, nothing. If i stop the car, the fan immediately comes on and will continue running for 5 minutes or so. Usually in a parking lot -- this draws a group of concerned citizens. I like to meet folks, but not under this situation.

Had the turbo replaced last year, as one expert said that's the problem. we have no oil leaks on the garage floor under the car. Every time we take it to the dealer they say there's nothing wrong.

Any insights?? I am super appreciate of any guidance...

dpf filter needs changing if doing it every week ie its trying to regen its self from your description. as you have had a turbo failure as well thats a bi product of heat and pressure build up from blocked dpf filter, volvo and ford and psa put a 75000 miles life on them, drying around like it will kill off the engine at some point with diesel wash getting in to oil

ho yes they are not cheap,, could try cats2u.com on line see if they have better price one,
there are companies that can clean them with special equipment they mainly do truck ones as need heat and pressure to clean them out as they are saturation type of filter,, its classed as a service item that has a life span or it will destroy the engine and turbo's for a past time, it is possible to delete them but is a mot or car test failure etc, but its only visual test in uk and tend to go through mot fine after
