cambelt change

No problems, ive had so called bmw specialists telling me its a chain
the 1.6 hdi engine is a psa engine and does have both ie a chain that links the two cam shafts within the head and a timing belt on front of engine thats also runs water pump. 150.000 miles they say on change times but the water pump wont last that long rule of thumb 80k change both the camshaft chain they also say 150k have seen tensioners fail around 80 k before and the chain eats through the rocker cover and gets a bad oil leak tends to be first sign of it failing,
post march 2010 they changed to the bmw n47 diesel that has a timing chain mounted at rear of engine these snap or slip after around 70-90k and are so expensive to change as its a gearbox or engine out to do so,,
your engine is psa one its also got a dpf filter in exhaust as well as additive tank in rear that needs refilling every 45k and reset the counter at same time failure to do this will result in blocked dpf this can lead to turbo failure that leads to diesel overrun and end of engine , ford and volvo use same engines they put this filter at a service replace item at 75.000 miles ,, many people have had them removed and mapped out and this just makes the car so much better, but s a mot failure but mot is a visaul check so just remove the internals and have mapped out cant tell as filter is in in two parts,, its possible to buy a element for the filter on ebay £120 ish the additive is £20 litre ish takes just over 2

its possible to buy a kit to reuse the old bladder again if its not split but most do, worth ringing ocean bmw in plymouth parts department recently i have had a number of parts off them and been fairly cheap and genuine is a bonus, its the fluid that is so expensive also be so careful handling it its poison that will soak through you skin ie no skin contact,, as for resetting the counter in the ecu the cheapest and best diagnostic tool and easy to use compared to anything else is autocom cdp plus link below for a double circuit board full function one .
cheapest dpf filter element below,
the best diagnostics you can get for money and will works on anything on the road read and write and live data etc

added note after fitting new dpf need to also with autocom reset the ecu ie tell its got a new dpf i also force a regen on them to clean out the top cat and turbo vnt after fitting a new one then reset it all again as such autocom will do it,

thats great mike thanks for the info and fast reply, its people like you that make it worth joinining forums on the internet
thank you glad could help,
if were my car would have it deleted its mot failure but its a visual check it cleans them up so much and can drive low revs where good mpg is without blocking uot the dpf filter, had both mine done on the past also had last one turned up to 160bhp ish transformed it in fact that car seen it last week still bombing around guy said its been great no problems which is nice to know,, but that was 68k car with full history when done,, would think twice if any car is over 100,000 miles or if ever had a turbo melt down in the past always needs to be a right car if that makes sense., if not just do the dpf delete and egr.

no must be mapped and codes removed from self check all mapping company's do this and can do been doing them for years, the bonus ball is the oil stays clean as well also the turbo spools up early on a sound a car this can be increased as well,
i have this guy called dale its top bloke with ecu's etc and i send a ecu off to him he deletes and maps it sends it back all i needed to do was remove the filter and blank the egr never had a problem doing that its easy delete on them no welding of cutting just big hammer and chisel and 10mm socket and 13mm one for the strap around it, as filter is two piece, by deleting egr valve this stops exhaust gases ie around 15% in the combustion chamber ie this gas dont burn its inert so when deleted you notice a bitter pick up, the above is for anyone who has min mechanical nohow its fairly easy with some tool and axle stands etc,
