Can anyone beat this?

I decided this was too good not to share!

The car: November-2007 build MINI Cooper S (auto start/stop version), 23,000 miles, running on Shell V Power, running with no modifications.

The test: to see how far a MINI Cooper S could really travel on one tank of petrol.

The conditions: conducted over five days in approximately 10 degrees C, driving extremely gently - not exceeding 2,000rpm! No air conditioning allowed, no open windows but otherwise full electrics allowed - heater, CD player, Bi-Xenon headlights etc.

The roads: mostly conducted at 53mph (indicated - 50mph actual) on dual carriage ways and motorways (I decided this was a safe minimum), though includes a share of traffic and urban driving - including Birmingham centre on a Friday evening at 5:30pm.

The result: 550.5 miles (886km) on one tank of fuel in a MINI Cooper S! equating to an actual pump-to-pump measured 51.5mpg (UK gallons, not US)! though the car was reporting 54.5mpg.

:D:D:D

Bloody hell.

The best I have acheived with my R50 Cooper was 47mpg

even that's impressive. The best I have ever achieved is 43mpg driving like a nun on Sunday ;)
It beats my old R50 Cooper too - I reckon a R56 MCS can achieve 2-3mpg better on average. :D

I didn't quite match the 54.3mpg extra-urban figure that BMW claims though. :(
Holy cow that's good.

You entering the MPG Marathon next year then? :D
i drove to brighton from chorley lancs over the summer, did it early one morning and got 450 ish from my r53 cooper s.

it was quoting me 525 for the tank on the way back too!

nice figures though, makes me think about trading super for turbocharged!

Maybe I should! Having checked the 2008 event - a MINI JCW entered and managed 50.3mpg. I do think the key to success is cruise control - trying to keep at a constant speed using manual adjustment of the throttle burns more fuel. After the first 20 miles of my experiment, my OBC was reading 60.1mpg!
