Canadian Pricing!

I stumbled across an article in today's Toronto Sun while visting a friend (no-one would actually admit to buying the Sun :)). In the DriverSource section, there was a mention about the 500 launch edition Cooper's available now on www.mini.ca. But the article also mentioned base Cooper pricing at $24,950.

By calculating an effective exchange rate of 1.48 over US, this would put the Cooper S at around $29,400. Following typical BMW patterns, my guess is the Cooper S will be $28,950. Or, perhaps they'll be greedy and ask $29,950.

So there you have it, folks, the Mini Cooper will be $24,950 in Canada.

That's certainly the best price in all of North America!

In US dollars, the North American base prices for the standard Cooper are:

Canada: US$15,500 + destination charges
US: US$16,300 + destination charges
Mexico: US$20,900 + destination charges

I'm not sure how the basic specification differs, but it looks like Mexico is the Netherlands of North America. :(

This would explain why BMW/MINI Canada is having us sign non-exportation agreements so we don't sell our cars south of the border. This has apparantly become somewhat of an issue lately. For example, with current exchange rates, someone from the US would save as much as US$3000 if they bought a 325i in Canada. Plus, our cars usually come with additional standard features that the US counterpart does not. This does not appear to be the case with the Mini's (may be too early to tell), but this is historically the case with BMWs. Certainly incentive enough to attempt a gray market purchase...
