Car cutting out

259 Views 2 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  mike1967
Hello. Not long ago I brought a 2010 Mini Cooper one. Recently my car has caused me nothing but trouble. It is my first car and now makes me very anxious to drive it.

When I am driving and coming to slow down or stop at junctions/ traffic lights my car seems to cut out and my rpm drops to 0. I have to restart my whole car each time. When I first got the car this didn’t happen but now it is happening often. I’ve taken it to garages but they cannot seem to find a cause to the problem. Has anyone else experienced this or know why this happens?

Double check your engine oil from cold (can be tricky as the dip sticks are shi*) a system called vanos runs off engine oil and if low can stop vanos from functioning correctly and give you a similar fault description

first off needs to be scanned with a good diagnostics plat form that can run live data see whats doing what,, ie any misfires and prescribed and actual positions of the vanos sprockets with that can help to work out of timing chain needs doing or not,, also smoke test on inlet pipe work common thing on pre 2010 prince engines is the breather pipe on the top of rocker cover that goes to the inlet manifold lower cracks and lets in un metered air in to the inlet manifold,, its a royal pain to diagnose as to remove it is inlet manifold off,, or what i do is engine running on idle spray some easy start down around the pipe in short bursts if idle changes tone then its cracked and needs a new one, £29.00 ocean bmw,, after 2010 they replaced them with a solid one that dont crack on all prince engines including the psa brand.
2010 is change over time on this pipe so some have it changed some do not, way to tell is the early ones the pipe is ridged and later ones are totally smooth,
how many miles has car done would be next thing north of 60k its well in realms of timing chain stretched enough that tensioner has also gone weak and is allowing the timing to move around on and off the over run when driving hence the cutting out,, 2010 once again is a change over year they revised the tensioner for timing chain for a longer one so some had some did not, longer tensioner just moved the when the chain would fail to a bit later mileage. i done a peugeot this week on a 2010 1,4s with 73500 miles on it all main agent service bottom sprocket was rounded off and chain was stretched and tensioner was all way out, that would run but as soon as rev'd it like a blip on off it would cut out,, hope that gives a few likely causes, if more than 60k on ts factory chains that would be my first need to check before going much further with it,
