How about a BMW M3, basic list £39K or with the really sexy SMGII gearbox £42k or a nearly new M5.
I am a bit biased though!!!

I agree,
New M3 smg, or a used 01 M5, performance "bargain" of the century. Does he need 4 doors or 2?
If he likes his performance cars, and judging by the list he does, then the M5 will not dissapoint, will easily smoke the RS4 and the Porsche, but the EVO & Skyline are a might different. I have not had any experience of those so cannot comment. Depends on what he wants it for. How about a Caterham 7 Blackbird/Fireblade, or R500. Track cars mainly but serious performers.

I had 911 Carrera4 traded it for Evo6 Makinen (VII not as good in my opinion) - If your friends in this market itidepends if he wants roar performance - The EVO is like nothing I've ever driven on or off track for pure KoCart style fun with four doors OR he wants 'pure' indulgent power - 911 has a kick up the ass that is amazing 30-100 without changing gear or feeling like you need to It's like being pushed by a huge stick on the boot !! EVO is more like someone just let a very large firework off inside your engine.

It's a tough choice if your a performance person at this money -

Me I settled on a MINI!!! more sense than money

A Cooper S for normal use and something like a Metro 6R4 for hooligan use at the weekend. That way if I break my 0-60 in 4 secs toy, I still have a great car to drive to work. And I'd still have change from the £40k to insure them both.

Thanks for the replies. BMW M3 good idea but have a Beemer for everyday use and don't want another. Caterham's are great but no luggege space for driving holidays. Lotus elise is abolsulety Fab but that was his car before last. Keep um coming

thanks again

well the elise 160 sport that I had was £30k and loads more fun than the standard

or for even more fun go for the Exige which is just wild and has absolutely no right to hold the road as it does

or the 340R which is a great track car but no roof lol!!

my next beast in this field will be the Tuscan S
much improved over the standard and fits into your price catagory

:D

nice thought elise boy - an elise was also my last car and it was great but had to sell due to insurance reasons:( but he sold the elise because that did not have enough luggage room and the exige has no boot and well the 340R has nothing!!!!

As for the TVR well I love them but he is not so keen on the syling or the reliability.. I know I know .. I like the styling 2 but unfortunatly I don't have the money to spend.

there must be some more cars out there i havn't thought of yet.!

M3 (with either 6 speed manual or SMGII) or a certified used M5 for the same reasons stated above by washy and AER. M5 is known to be "wolf in sheep's clothing," basically a sports car with four doors and a nice interior. The M3 has a great chasis, engine, road dynamics, and not to mention some stunning looks

Unless your friend has a dog or plan to travel frequently, I do not advise him getting the RS4 as there is a whole debacle on the soft wheels/ bad design suspension that affected many owners.

The Carrera 4 would be a fine car to own as well, but I believe the price will be out or range from the budget unless he can find a decent used one for that price.

good luck and keep us posted :)

What is his requirements? just needs to go to and from work, carry his work with him, fun car, general daily driver/occasional track day, hatch/4 doors etc?
Every body is coming up with some seriously good machinery (apart from the Micra!, which is OK in it's own way).
How old does he want it to be? How about a Lotus Carlton? 3.8 M5? AMG Mercedes? XJR Sport Supercharged Jag?
As he's had BMW's before, how about a close look at a decent Alpina, B8 (V8) very rare, or a B10 Bi Turbo, pulverise the odd 911/Ferrari while on his way to work? both are excellent drivers cars, or Hartge/Schnitzer modified car.
Then again there's the BMW X5 4.6 sport, the list can be endless.

Ok What he wants.

Works from home so it is not for commuting, fed up with the unreliability of the ferrari so wants somthing reliable and easy to keep.

Car will most probably be used daily.

Must have enough luggage room for weeks away driving in france

Can't be another BMW as he thinks 1 is enough?!! - sorry guys i don't get this one either

Basically the Ferrari was perfect , has quite a bit of storage space superfast and great fun.

Needs to be reasonably sensible on depreciation

does not have to be new

preferably a convertable but they are hard to come by.

budget extended to 50K

If you want anymore details just post them and i will reply

Lotus Esprit V8 !! I'll add that 1 to my list.

How about a Ford??
Cosworth Escort, one of the Ltd Ed Monte Versions. At the moment they have more or less zero depreciation, and the ones that are around are being cosseted by their owners.
I'm running out of ideas here!
or there's always the capable Volvo 850R, saloon or estate,

How about a Boxster S? good pace style reliability luggage space and the roof goes down.

what more do you want get it speced up and will be around £45 and not depreciate too much
