Hello, I have a 58 plate cooper D with the full JCW kit.
For a while i have been getting a single clonk noise when pulling away then again when coming to a hault. But the other day while driving around it got alot worse. I would get a continued clonking noise only when I lifted off the accelerator but once I accelerated it stopped. Tge clonking sounds metallic. My mechanic has had a look at the car and can only get the clonk on pulling away and stopping, not constant. He has had it up on the ramp and cannot see anything loose or hanging off.
Has anybody got any idea what it might be as we are stuck.

Thanks

Check the engine/gearbox mounts. give it a good shove forwards and backwards in the engine bay and see if there is excessive movement.

Also worth having a look at your lower wishbone bushes. With the handbrake on, give the front wheels a good shove forwards and backwards with your foot. Again you're looking for excessive movement.

After this I'd take the wheels off and check the calipers are fitted correctly (bolts still tight).

Still have this issue and has got a bit worse. The clonking/clicking seems to be coming from around front wheel arch area. It happens when mainly at low speed and I am either costing or have clutch pedal pressed down. As soon as I accelerate or touch the brake pedal it will stop. The sound it like ( one for the older people) when you used to put a piece of card on your bicycle fork so it brushed your wheel spokes.
Mechanic has had it on the ramp and says everything is solid.
Any ideas appreciated.
Thanks

When mechanic had it in garage he said everything was solid but I do wonder..it comes and goes and only appears when load is off the wheels
