master cylinder spring clip holds the rod in to it,, would be best guess without seeing it or maybe the cross pin has popped out look around carpet area for a metal pin

those master cylinders and slaves only seem to do around 70.000 miles ish when used around town a lot ie more use, also if replace one then the other wont be far off gone as well,, ie replace pair together and flush out old fluid in case of any rubber debris etc is best way forward one lot of labour to bleed the system and also the slave is a easy to replace as on outside of gearbox unlike some that are concentric and in side the bell housing and means gearbox out lol.. guess bmw could only get away with a few very stupid designs on one car i guess lol
