Cooper S waiting list in USA?

Hello all, I'm new to the site and enjoy it quite a bit.

I'm very serious about getting a Cooper S when they come available, but my local dealer is trying to disaude me on the basis that I won't be able to take delivery for at least a year. They say if I sign up today there are 55 people ahead of me in line for an 'S'. So, I was wondering if this is about the normal number of people on the waiting list at dealerships? Additionally, is there an estimate of the number of 'S' cars that will be exported to the states for '02?

Also, has anyone here seen the February issue of Car and Driver? Supposedly there is a very favorable article on the Cooper.

Thanks!

Unfortunetly for you, he is correct. Look this site over and you will find previous posts on the numbers. 70 dealers nationwide, 10 to 20 cars per month to start with and a cap at 20K per year later. Go figure. Yes, Road and Track wrote a great article. It will only increase the demand.
good luck and stay with the site. It is the best!

In Long Island, New York there are 2 MINI dealers.
One has been taking $1,000 deposits, has about 45 on the list for an S.
The other has not been taking deposits, and have been waiting till the pricing comes out. They will probably be calling me any day now for the $$$. This dealer has 200 people on their waiting list, 95% are for the S.
Thank the good Lord I am number 6!:p
Same here - In Atlanta, BMW dealers (only 2 or 3) will get the base Mini come off the truck for buyers on the list on 3/22/02. They are taking $1000 as a deposit. End of Jan, they should have a few in for test driving.

The S model comes in in June - The rep mentioned that it would take 3 more months to gte in the Mini S you ordered (!).

My question is this: Does the $1000 deposit get deducted from the final cost of the car?

I spoke to my soon to be dealer this morning (Tampa Area). They were not taking deposits but I was put on the "List". I am 236, I didn't specify that I was after an "S" but I am.

I was told they are hoping to have one for one day in Late February, at which point they will invite the people on the list to come have a look and maybe drive one.... He would not commit to taking any deposits or orders anytime soon...
Well, in the Mentor, Ohio dealer we are 69 on the list, but we told them we want the S. They say we could get it in May or June, but we'll see...

I gave my dealer a $500 deposit and they told me it will be deducted from the final cost of the car.

YES
Where are you in South Florida? I am in Fort Lauderdale and have my deposit at Lauderdale MINI. I am number 46, so I will have to wait a little longer. I don't think a year would be an acurate wait for being #55 on the list maybe 6 months, but it will be well worth the wait!!!

From what I have heard the deposit WILL be deducted from the total cost.
Educated Guesstimate of US ETA

Figure the first cars will be here to look at by the end of February. First Coopers to come end of March/early April, first S's by May. Each dealer to get approx. 30 cars a month with 1/3 being S's. Guess the first month's allocation will be prespecced cars, and the lead time for customer specced car will be 6-8 weeks. Figure you can order a Cooper end of Feb. and S by April.
ETA of first ordered Cars:
Cooper end of April to May.
Cooper S end of June to July.

That's pretty good, actually. If I called everyone today I'd have about 4-500 on the S, and 100 or so on the cooper.
I am in Portland, OR.
I am #140 on a list of over 300 people. All of us have plopped down $500. I am not expecting to get my cooper s until December 2002 or even Jan 2003. I am hoping that any bugs in the cars will be well worked out by then. That's my consolation for not being the first lucky bastard to drive off in a new mini cooper s on day 1!

I guess our dealer will be receiving about 40 minis with factory selected options to start. I am really hoping that a bunch of people on the list just grab those. But, I am betting that most people ahead of me will be wanting to order a custom mini cooper s instead.

Patience...patience....

I can't wait to get a photo of my mini next to my Ford Expedition! That oughta be a hoot.
