Cooper S Works faster than Civic Type R!

Just read in either Autocar or Autoexpress that the £17500 John Cooper Works S was 1.5 seconds quicker around a track than the Civic Type R.

Didn't buy the mag and can't remember what track they used.

If the JCW S is 1.5 seconds faster than the CTR then the standard S should be pretty evenly matched.

It was today's (13th Feb) issue of Autocar. It was at Goodwood circuit. Only a very small piece at the bottom of one of the news pages. They state the 200bhp Cooper S works is on schedule for September 2002 release.
Seems slightly strange that the mags are testing a Works S before a std S against a CTR... I wonder if this is a deliberate strategy on BMW's part to create a perception that the S 'bests' the CTR. Suggests a regular S would fall short on these track tests
That's Showbusiness!

The Civic Type-R has instantly become THE benchmark for performance and value. I expect MINI PR people are going to try every trick in the book to knock it off its perch - and why not:D
Autocar wouldn't have tested it (BMW would have a fit). They either timed it or got some info from JCG.

The comparison is not really valid unless both cars were "showroom stock" and tested at the same track on the same day. Track conditions change with temperature and humidity and it doesn't take much to alter the outcome. Until the S is "official," everything is just speculation.
Silly thought, I know, but has anyone seen pics of this unicorn?
