Creaking Windscreen

My MINI One is a month old with 900 miles on the clock, I am delighted with my MINI, but the windscreen makes a creaking noise which seems to be getting worse. I have prodded a poked all of the place to try to identify the source of this "creak" and it is driving me up the wall. Any ideas ??

Mine does this sometimes too (Sept 04 build) - I haven't got around to asking the dealer about it... but it seems to happen when the car is going over uneven ground, as if the bodyshell is twisting a bit and the windscreen is moving...
mine does exactly the same, built nov 04. the thing that's really annoying me though is the creaky dashboard! as soon as i take it on a long journey it creaks non stop, i assume it's expanding or something as the car warms up. have you had any similar experiences?
Mmmmm very interesting to hear your comments. Mine creaks even when the car is moving at 10 mph. I keep it in a warm garage and I am thinking that maybe in the current cold weather the temperature change is affecting the winscreen seal. It shouldn't happen though on a BMW !
Mine creaks too (January 2004 build). My advise would be to take it to your dealer. I had my MINI serviced a few days ago, and I told my dealer about the dash rattling and windscreen, and it's going back in a couple of weeks time to have it looked at and sorted (as well as a new steering column). The dealers are usually very helpful, and will sort it for you.
Creaking Windscrees

I have had the same problem too, I bought my Mini one in November last year and the windscreen started 'creaking' after only a few miles. I took it back to the dealer on several occasions and they eventually diagnosed the problem (I think this is right) as being the metal arm which connects from the roof to the windscreen was not soldered properly and was moving about. They also apparantly had to contact a specialist windscreen company to advise them as to what to do! All seems to be OK now though.
I have an 04 Cooper S and this 'creaky windscreen' noise has started to occur on my vehicle in the last few weeks. Its total mileage from new is 5500 miles.

The car is always garaged at night and I think the noise is actually coming from the top of the dash due to the cold weather and not the windscreen itself, although it certainly does sound like the windscreen when you first hear it from the drivers seat.

I have noticed that when I press on the windscreen from the inside on a cold morning, it does not cause the windscreen to creak as i would have expected it to if the problem was the screen itself.

I am sure the problem is the top of the dash creaking in the cold until the inside of the car has warmed up a little and then the noise seems to stop after a while.

I have a similar problem on a Lexus 4x4 we own, where there is a creak from the dash when the ambient temperature seems to drop below 10 C. Once the car has warmed up a little it stops and during the rest of the year when its not quite so cold the problem goes altogether.

I may still get my dealer to have a look at the Mini though, just in case.

ps

just looking at all the previous posts again, I noticed that you all have recieved your cars in the last few months whilst it has been pretty cold.

It is only since it has got cold prior to xmas that my car has started to mauke this noise.

I'm sure its just the cold soak on the car over the winter months and that the noise we can all hear is the dash creaking, but it sounds like the windscreen due to the way the noise is reflected to the driver off the screen.

Just my two pennith for what its worth.
I have the same problem

My Mini is a December 04 build, with just under 1500 miles on the clock, the problem is intermittant but seems to be getting more and more frequent. I'm just turning the radio up for the time being until I can get it looked at.

Other than that and the difficulties selecting reverse I'm experiencing - I'm happy with the car.
Yes there is a creak in your windscreens. I too have a 2005 MCS and mine creaks as well. I have taken it in for the noise and been told that it was the heater box to which I know its not that. So unless you would like to replace the windscreen with your own money then i would have to say your stuffed and your just gonna have to deal with the noise. after all this is a very small car the MCS has the sport suspension enabling it to have a rougher ride and you are gonna hear these creak bumps etc etc etc. I have had my MCS in the dealer about 8 times now for these things and came to the conclusion that i just have to accept my dear ol MCS the way she is. I wouldnt have her any other way...and by the way yes the speedo trim does rattle as well but will go away if you push on it or let the car warm up some....take care!!

Precisely...!! The Mini's body is under alot of stress causing various noises and creaks about the car. Either deal with the noises cuz you will drive yourself insane taking it back in for each noise that is produced. Trust me you will never get rid of all the noises in the MCS except it......and roll on!! MCS + Sport suspension + rough ride = lotsa noises. My girlfriend thinks that I am psycho due to the amount of times that i have turned down the tunes to hear of another noise or rattle and try to find out where it was coming from during outtings.
I'v had the same problem ,well i think it was the dash top rubbing against the windscreen.Mine is a Sept 04 MO and i didn't have the noise until i took it back and they took the dash out to fix a buzzing speedo and to also fix a faulty heated front windscreen.Once i got the car back this new creaking noise had appeared along with two rips in the dash top(they did point this out to me and said they would replace it) ,so it then went in about 1 month later to have the replacement screen replaced cos it was now leaking(very disconcerting watching water come out of the rear view mirror)and to have the dash top done. When i phoned to pick it up they said the leak was now fixed but they would need to replace the dash top.It would have to be booked back in cos the dash top would take 7 to 10 days to arrive."but it came in to have it fixed and the dash should have been ordered about a month ago".The lady said she would check."i'm afraid that we have a dash top here sir but its already damaged".So its been back since and they replaced it ,and made the noisy dash even worse.Even with the Harmon Kardon on loud you could still here it.So it went back again last Friday, now most of the noise has gone and i think its acceptable, what i didn't think was acceptable was the puncture in the dash top(admittedly small but still there )and the scuffs and small tear in the under side of the dash just above the speedo,The quality of workmanship is decidely lacking. The motto seems to be the more you take it back the more problems you will have.Just my little moan on the subject from my personal experience.Oh and whenever i pick up the car after the dash has been out ,the headlight height adjuster is always hanging out

TWO points to make !

First, in response to SiNNeD, just because it is a small car doesn't mean it should be poorly assembled, remember this is actually a BMW ! Squeaks and rattles are not why I've paid a premium price for this vehicle.

Second, PROBLEM SOLVED ! I have noted that several postings here have referred to late build 2004 cars and maybe this is a common fault. The SOLUTION is as follows. There are three lugs which hold the dashboard in place. There should be rubber stuffing surrounding these lugs. In my case the local dealer, CHANDLERS of Brighton, removed the dash, inserted the rubber stuffing in 20 minutes and now the vehicle is as it should be.

100% praise for Chandlers. Having had Fords and FIATs previously, this is how dealerships should be. Even a cup of decent coffee, biscuits and a newspaper to keep me occupied whilst they sorted the problem.

I couldnt agree with you more in your first response as I too have paid out the a$$ to get my MCS. These rattles are not to say the least minimal by me saying this its not just a few of us that have em. EVERYONE has them so that must me one of two things BMW makes a crap Mini or BMW just makes a crap MCS. I have driven the MC's and they dont make this noise at all...in fact they made no noise whatsoever. The ride was nicer as they dont have the sport suspension and IMHO they have alot better ride then the MCS. I think if you go to the Classic Mini forums that you will find that they have a BARRAGE of noises and rattles in them..I for one have just grown to deal with the rattles cuz I am sick and tired of going into the dealer to have them sorted. And like my service rep here at CARRS of Bury St. Edmunds told me that you will find yes you can bring it in for rattles and squeaks but you will find the more you drive it the more they will come about, its just bound to happen!!

I too share your pain with the ripped dashboard...only mine took forever to get here it went backorder which would seem to be being that I live 3 hours from the Oxford plant that they would have this part readily avaialable :(
Windscreen Replaced !

Further to my earlier report, I regret to say the creaking windscrean has re-occurred !

My local MINI dealership has now replaced the windscreen, as the factory fitted unit was incorrectly installed. (This will have cost MINI a lot as the windscreen is electrically heated.)

My problem really does now seem to have been sorted. It appears from other comments that late 2004/05 build cars share this defect.
Mmmm

No creaks on mine, silence :p
Oh ...mine hasn't got the creaking dash/windscreen anymore................now i have the irritating speedo buzz/rattle back that it went in for in the first place ,and that gave way to the ripped dash saga.I have also spotted a rip in the back of my steering wheel and the dash has about a centimeter gap between it and the dash top on the drivers side and a couple of days ago when the weather first turned nice i thought it was time i opened the sunroof..........pressed the button ,roof opened, squeak squeak rattle rattle.........AAARRRGGGHHH.I think i'm now regretting selling my Jan 03 ONE for this Sept 04 ONE.The problems are one thing but i at least expect decent service.I also have black sealer in the rubber door seal so when the window wants to drop down when you open the door ,it is doing so reluctantly because its stuck to the sealant, took it back yesterday morning because the little guttering bit above the A pillar on the passenger side was coming off and asked them to look at the problem with all the sealer. After waiting two hours they fixed the guttering but hadn't got time to clean off the sealer.Must be a huge job. They always seem very busy and the courtesy cars are difficult to get a hold of ,does this mean they have lots of problems.?Fortunately for BMW MINI i love my car,at the moment though i'm not so keen on the dealer, methinks i may have to try a different one next time i purchase.

I had this. My dealer replaced the speedo and the rattling is gone. :D
Hi Sebby,I had a new speedo fitted in November,it was then that the dash got ripped and i didn't get a non ripped dash that didn't rattle until mid march but now the rattle/buzz from the speedo that started off my problems is back again, so all that inconvenience and hassle was for nowt,i just now have a dash that still isn't fitted right, although that doesn't currently make a noise, and the rip in the back of the steering wheel.I told the dealer that i was sick and tired of taking it back and that i wanted to drive it for a bit myself for a while cos there was a point when it seemed that they had it more than i did.Its a shame cos its taken the gloss off a car that i love .I waited from its first showing in 1997 until 2003 to get my first MINI and then when the facelifted version came out i thought i could spec my new MINI with all the things that i wished i had put on the first one.One of those items was the heated front screen which was faulty and then the replacement was ill fitted and leaked.I paid £240 for the privilege of having the 'official' viper stripes only for them to be fitted by a complete amateur when i could have gone after market and had a better job done for less than half the price, and when the salesman said 'it will look okay when you drive past somebody down the road ,they won't notice' i said but the 'somebody' down the road isn't the one paying for them.Sorry to go on,i only ever mean to write a few lines but always end up writing war and peace.I'm not really this miserable.........i even wave at all the bu##ers that don't wave at me.
