This is my first post here: I hope that someone can help.

I am dismantling my daughter's 2010 1.6 Cooper to replace the timing chain and guide rails: it is clattering since she let the oil level drop to the minimum for some time.

I have lost one of the two small, round rubber o-rings which seal the cam cover to the head and am concerned that it may have gone into the oil way by the front of the engine. I cannot see it, though, and cannot see how it could have gone down out of sight. I cannot see how it could get in there because of the cast-in bar across the oil way.

I feel that I should remove the head to try and check the oil way.

Can anyone point me to a video showing the removal of the head? I assume that it is a case of line up the cams in the same way as for removing the chain, lock the cams, remove the chain, remove all fixing bolts and lift off the head, using a new gasket on replacing it.

i would remove the sump first and see if can find in there, use hooked piece of wire and push down the hole you think its gone down, or use a old vacuum cleaner and make up a nozzle with duct tape and a small enough tube to just fit in to the hole and see if can suck it back out works have used this method a number of times in the past, if you need to remove head then doing time chain kit at same time is a must do job,new head bolts a must do, and do valve stems seals as well, use clean grease when fitting the seals stops them getting damaged on first start up, you will need special lock kit for chain,

Mike,

Thank you for the links, which are really helpful.

Thank you, also, for the suggestion about dropping the sump. On reflection, it sounds like a much more logical approach. I shall give it a go, poking wire down the oil way to push the o-ring through, assuming that it is in there. I shall have another good scout around first, though, in case it has pinged off somewhere. I like the vacuum cleaner idea, but I suspect that it would little to foster distaff harmony.

Regards,

Jamie.
i've lost count the amount of stuff i have dropped in places where i really should not have to spend a day trying to find, the worst ones are the ones that take a long time to search for,, then you move the lead lamp and there it is hmmm i'm sure they always laugh lol
