Driver door does not ‘click’ shut

Hi All,

My partner has a 2018 Cooper. This morning it’s bitterly cold and her driver door will not shut properly. I’ve checked that the window is dropping and lifting at the right time. The issue appears to be more with the lock mechanism itself.

I’ve checked the working door and as the locking mechanism engages with the catch it eventually ’clicks’ into a closed position. This is not now happening on the driver side. It is not clicking into a closed position, it’s still able to spring back.

I’m assuming there’s an issue with some kind of retaining clip in the mechanism but I’m just wondering if anyone has experienced similar. Is there a DIY fix for this? If not, the car still has about 7 weeks of warranty left. Something like this feels like it falls within the warranty. Agree?

Would really appreciate any feedback you guys might have. I’m possibly the least practical person around so my deductions above are based on little more than a presumptive common sense approach :)

That would all depend on the type of warranty?(bumper to bumper or drive train). When dealing with doors that are unlocked or unhooked replacement of the entire mechanism is the saftest way to do that. Example: your driving home and your driving and driving. Then you get home and unbuckle your seat belt and instead of pulling the latch the door just opens up.
I would have the whole latch assembly replaced. only keeping the handles (outside, and inside). Also when stuff like that happens it pays to inspect the door seals making sure nothing is damage or crushed flat over the years and usage of the Car.

Hi

My partner has the 2018 F57 model mini cooper and has had the same problem for the second year running, first encountered the problem last year after the door seemed to close normally then whilst driving decided to swing open when turning left, pulled over and tried to close the door but it wouldn't click shut so had to wait approximately 10 minutes and the decided to shut normally. Booked into the local BMW dealer who in a warm workshop could not find a problem.
The same problem has occurred during the recent cold spell with 15 minute waits to secure the vehicle after use.
Have tried de-icer / wd40 in lock but no difference, booked into BMW Monday 15th but doubt a fault will be found as temperature is due to get warmer.
Obviously there is a fault with the door mechanism in cold weather and I suggest your partner should be aware the door can open whilst car is in motion.
I will post after the dealership check next week.

Anyone else with this problem !!! as could be a potential accident..
