Driving Lamps: Are they legal In CA?

Hi list,

I was wondering if the MINI driving lamps are legal in California, USA?

Do the lamps only come on when the high beams are turned on? The MINI site says they work with the high beams and have a seperate on off for whenever you want to use them. Is this how it works?

Is there a good aftermarket protective covering that is clear?

Thanks in advance,

This is the law in California that I found on driving lamps:

West's Ann.Cal.Vehicle Code § 24402

West's Annotated California Codes Currentness

Vehicle Code (Refs & Annos)

Division 12. Equipment of Vehicles

Chapter 2. Lighting Equipment

Article 2. Headlamps and Auxiliary Lamps

§ 24402. Auxiliary driving and passing lamps

(a) Any motor vehicle may be equipped with not to exceed two auxiliary driving lamps mounted on the front at a height of not less than 16 inches nor more than 42 inches. Driving lamps are lamps designed for supplementing the upper beam from headlamps and may not be lighted with the lower beam.

(b) Any motor vehicle may be equipped with not to exceed two auxiliary passing lamps mounted on the front at a height of not less than 24 inches nor more than 42 inches. Passing lamps are lamps designed for supplementing the lower beam from headlamps and may also be lighted with the upper beam.

I would double check with registry of motor vehicles just to be sure.

There is a switch on the left of the steering wheel to turn the driving lamps on. You can have them on with the high beams only. If you switch from high beams, with the driving lamps on, to low beams and then back to high beams, the driving lights will stay on unless you had shut them off. Once you shut the car off, the driving lamps are no longer on.
