I need to remove the front subframe on my R56. All articals I have seen remove the pinch bolt at the bottom of the steering column where it joins the steering rack, then disconnect two electrical connectors, crack the track rod end balljoints, then drop subframe with rack attached.

If I do it this way the steering wheel may end up out of alignment if either the rack or the wheel move.

But the rack is only secured to the subframe with 3 torqs bolts. so why not just remove the three bolts then drop the subframe leaving the steering rack on the car?

yep leave rack on car, when split front hubs lower arms away undo the two nuts that bolt the ball joints to arms by doing ot that way it wont hurt the ball joints ..invest in ball joint splitter tools

Thanks Mike, glad you agree its possible, it makes no sense to me removing the rack attached to the subframe. I have a good range of tools including ball splitters, so no problems there.
