My yellow engine light stayed on today. I looked the book and it says its the exhaust emissions. Should this be looked at immediately, and would it be best to get it diagnostic checked @ the dealers or can a regular garage do the same ?

Thanks in advance, Ag.

The Stealers will charge you at least £45 just to plug it into the computer and then whatever they do afterwards is bound to be costly.:( A good regular garage is likely to have the diagnostic software or if they don't might get somone in to do it for them. I know a guy who is a mobile mechanic but he now spends alot of his time going to different garages to do their diagnostics for them as he has a fancy computer that can do all kinds of cars from Fords to VWs and BMW and Mini. If the car is still in its warrenty period get the dealer to sort it otherwise I would go elsewhere. You can always ask if they have had much experience with Minis.

Hope this helps and post up to let us know what you do.:)

first thing to check is that the gas cap is on tight. it being loose can trigger that to go off ... and it can take a number of off/on cycles to make it clear.

i'd take it to the dealer and see if there's a fault code. mine went off when i got a bad batch of gas ... it was the knock sensor. they cleared it. although i'm in a different country, it was under warranty and they took a look, cleared it, checked the ethanol level in my gas (over twice the legal limit) and did a bunch of other stuff for free when i brought it in.

amber means get it checked as soon as you can, but it's ok for now. if it turns red, however, stop immediately, do not pass go, do not collect £200 ...

mine also came on the other day afer I filled up with 95 ron petrol from asda in blyth. First time in a long time I've put supermarket petrol in and 95 ron. It came on the next day and stayed on until a day after I re-filled with the usual v-power.
Mine was probs the knock sensor on the 95 ron petrol as the car felt terrible to drive. It's now all good and back to it's usual self :D

My emissions light came on on Monday so I phoned my dealer (Cooper Tunbridge Wells) who booked me in for a diagnostic check for Friday a.m. I had no loss of power & the car was running absolutely fine.

Come Tuesday morning the light had gone out, so after leaving it till Thursday pm just to make sure, I phoned the dealer to cancel. After explaining to them that I had recently topped up both oil & petrol, they suggested that the mixture may have been a bit rich & was not something to worry about, & if I was worried then I could call them & re-book an appointment. Managed to get them to agree to a price of £35 for the diagnostic should I choose to have one done.

Was impressed by the fact they didn't insist that I definitely needed the check done just so that they could get their hands on my money.
