Hi,

I recently did a long journey in the car R50 Cooper and when I got home I found there was a cluster of long silver grey hairs/fibres coming out of the car’s exhaust, it looked like a wig.
I have been told that these are fibres from the rear box? Or muffler? Are they the same thing?
How urgent is it to get this sorted.
One garage wanted £160 for a new back box and £60 for the work. A Mini parts place in Kent had a whole first gen exhaust for £20 in good condition but that’s a bit tricky to get.
Is it a bad idea to do any long journeys until I get this sorted? Or will it just get louder as more fibres break away from the rear box?
What am I looking at here?
Thanks
T

There are two mufflers in your exhaust, the back box and one behind the cat. I believe the wadding could be from either of them. The back box will definitely have it in but i'm not sure about the forward one. Some cars only have baffles (no wadding) in exhaust boxes so close to the cat'. Either way I would be replacing the whole system from the back of the cat'. It's only a small system so won't cost much. I do all jobs on all of my vehicles (servicing to engine rebuilds) but even I don't bother with exhausts as they're a faff without a ramp and so cheap to have fitted that you don't save enough money to justify the effort.
Thanks for that

So is it best to just take the hit at an exhaust centre, or buy the exhaust and pay an MOT garage to fit it?

Just took the car to Kwik Fit and they quoted £235 with fitting, I only paid £600 for the car, but they did say a lot of the after market parts on the internet are badly built, but I guess they would say that. This might be a case of cough up and get it done, time vs money etc.
