Its illegal. They ticket for it varying amounts depending on where you are, and you can be pulled over for it, so then you can get tickets for anything else they see wrong that they may not be able to pull you over for.

I'm not sure the price of the ticket, I think its under $100.

People still do it with varying succes, I'm sure others in NY can give you advice on their experiences, and I've moved this to the NY forum.
Here is the info straight from the NY DMV question and answer site:
"If the DMV issues two vehicle plates for your vehicle, you must use both vehicle plates. Put one vehicle plate on the front of the vehicle and one vehicle plate on the back of the vehicle. There are no exemptions to this requirement.

If there is only one location on your vehicle to attach a vehicle plate, contact a parts store to get a device to attach the other vehicle plate to your vehicle.

The NYS Police and other law enforcement agencies recommend that vehicles display two vehicle plates. The two vehicle plates help the police to identify vehicles. The NYS vehicle plates use a reflective material, and the two vehicle plates improve the visibility of vehicles at night

If you use one vehicle plate instead of two vehicle plates, you can receive a fine of $25 to $200 and mandatory surcharges of $50.

The DMV issues one vehicle plate for some vehicles. These vehicles include trailers, motorcycles, and the tractor unit of a tractor-trailer."

Wow. Was this ever a frequent topic on Ferrarichat. I've been pulled over twice for not having a front plate on the Ferrari. I'm not sure if it was the fact that there really is no place to mount the front plate or my PBA card that saved me, but no ticket. The MINI does have a place to mount the front plate...right?

Tom
It was probably your PBA card. Not having 'a place' to put it isn't a real excuse to a cop who doesn't like you.

2002-2004 Coopers did automatically. All MCS and 2005 and newer MC need to have a bracket, but the bracket is easily provided by a dealer. Of course you need to screw into the bumper to mount it, so many times they won't mount it unless you ask, even in states that require a front plate. Mine for instance was sitting in the trunk upon pickup.

Agreed. It was partly due to the PBA card but, I feel attitude has the most to do with it. Within the first few minutes, put the officer at ease and don't be antagonistic and do be polite and respectful. I honestly believe that in most of my encounters with law enforcement, I wasn't going to get a ticket. The PBA card was extra insurance. Be nice out there. Cops are human too. :)

Mass. is the same way. According to the law, If the registry issues you two plates, both must be displayed. However, Mass. isn't very strict about enforcement because there are still lots of the old Green/White plates on the road, of which only one was issued. On the other hand, New Hampshire is known to be very strict about their two-plate law, but they can only enforce it on NH residents. BTW, they can't write-up out-of-state vehicles for expired inspection stickers either.

Windy, a PBA is a Police Benevolent Society card, kinda a generic term for some indication that you have a love of cops or a connection somewhere. Some states, like MA, have this kinda nicely graphiked (sorry) sticker that goes on the back window, filled with curlycues and looking innocuous but very helpful.

Here in NH, when I first got my MCS in 02, I avoided mounting my front plate until the 4th time I was stopped. As it was a statie who had stopped me the 1st time, he was a bit more stern. No ticket but I figured my winning smile and oily politeness were carrying me no further so I did the dirty deed and put the plate on. Some have, in NH, gotten away for a long time by mounting one of those euro styled purchased plates. Also remember that the front plate is one of 2 targets for laser.
Connecticut requires two plates but I have never mounted the 2nd plate on any vehicular motor.
I have been stopped many times. I carry the plate under the fromt passenger mat and tell the officer that it just fell off and I was rushing home to mount it.
I know Max and, believe me, there is far more to his spiel (sp.?) than he has related.

PBA stands for Police Benevolence Association. Basically a union for police officers. The card is given by an officer to friends and family. When shown to an officer, it will usually result in a non-ticket result. Some officers will confiscate the card and say you used it up. Note-----will not work for felonies ie. assault, burglery, murder, etc. ;)
