Hi all
Newbie here hoping to pick you brains,

When leaving the school where I work last night my Mini wouldnt unlock with the remote key, so i unlocked manually.

I turned on ignition, nothing, every thing dead. the caretaker gave me a booster start from his car with leads, and everything ok, drove home.

As i got out the car I could hear a noise like a Hoover going, I sat in the car for 10 mins and still going, I locked car up and went indoors, came out 2 hrs later and still going.

This morning battery flat so I got a jump start from neighbour and drove to work, noise still going even when when everything switched off.

Got the caretaker to have a look and he said its not cooling fan but noise seems to be coming from bulkhead area behind dash.

He tried removing fuses one by one but cant stop it.

Anyone got any ideas, the noise is still going now whilst it is in car park locked up.

appreciate any replies chaps.

Steff.

Sorry chaps, forgot to mention its a 54 plate cooper
"Noise like a hoover going" could just be the cooling system, it's not unusual for this to run while the car is stationary for a while.
I can't of anything back there off the top of my head that would sound like a hoover going. Although it sounds like something is not switching off, and keeps flattening your battery.

Worth getting your battery tested just to see if it is something flattening it, or whether its dead ;) Any good garage should be able to test it for you.
Also, there's fuses in the footwell and under the hood (I think this is correct on the Cooper?), in case you didn't realise that, it could be easily over looked.
Could well be the dreaded power steering pump fault

If you lift the bonnet is the noise louder
Sounds like one of the odd noises I got when my battery went.
Had one doing this, power steering pump was running all the time, disconnected thick red wire from bottom of fusebox and the noise stopped, looking at the power steering pump, it was covered n power steering fluid, also the alternator wasnt charging,

Any ideas what was causing this ?

that reminded me of a thread i saw a week ago:
http://www.mini2.com/forum/faults-fixes/118392-mini-cooper-s-problem-engine-fan-stays.html.

fans could be staying on and draining the batt, looked like a simple (temporary) fix if it is

Ok .now got it sorted. it was the power steering pump that had failed, apparently it can stay on when faulty.
Got it fixed by a local mechanic, reconditioned pump supplied and fitted £459. perfect now.
Main Dealer wanted over 700.any way thanks for all you advice.
