Hello All

We have an R52 with the factory fitted harmon kardon speakers and amp.

The two large door speakers are playing up. The drivers side doesn’t work and the passenger side is crackly and intermittent.

I have read it could be the amp.

Can the amp be changed for another make / model without to much diy grief. Should I start with just changing the speakers, which is my preferred option.
Is there any pitfalls I should look out for by changing the speakers to another make or should everything be ok, just plug and play or are there other things to consider.

Will I upset other electronics on the car?

I suggest you check the speakers with a DMM first. Speakers wear out, especially if played loud a lot.
A DMM on Ohms I would expect 2 to 4 ohms on a car speaker. Disconnect from the amplifier before measuring.
You can check the amplifier output too. DMM on ACV, playing music, speaker connected, you'll see a few volts indicated.

Or substitute the bad speaker for a known good one and see if anything changes
