How to charge the battery

1380 Views 6 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  DynamicDi
The battery of my (late) 2017 Mini Cooper keeps running very low due to lack of use right now and I have been trying to charge it up using a trickle charger. All the right lights come on but the battery doesn't seem to be charging, even when left connected for several hours. The user manual is hopeless - I need a photograph of exactly how to connect the charger to the terminals to ensure that I'm doing the right thing, otherwise it might be that the battery itself is at fault. Can anyone help please? Thank you

Most cheap battery charges won't tell you if the battery is defective. This one will. Instructions for connecting it are included. Red lead goes to the positive terminal of the battery; black lead goes to the negative terminal. Photographs are in the Amazon ad.

Hi - thanks for your response. I checked this on Amazon and it's not available with no outlook on availability. I have been connecting the red and black leads to the right terminals and when I did this a few days ago, the trickle charger light did change from red to green after a couple of hours. However, today it just stayed on red, even after 5 hours. I suspect the battery may be faulty because I've never had a battery run down as quickly as this on a Mini Cooper (this is my 4th). The car is leased and I'm due to change it in September so I think I'm going to ask the leasing company if they will let me get the battery checked at Kwik Fit as the Dealer has been a lot less than helpful about this. Thanks again for your very helpful reply.

Hi - thanks for your reply. The charger I am using is:
MOTOPOWER MP00205A-UK 12V 800mA Fully Automatic Battery Charger/Maintainer-UK Plug
It worked OK a few days ago and the red light changed to green after a couple of hours. However, today I put it on charge for 5 hours and the light stayed red. I suspect the battery has a fault because I've never before had this happen in a Mini Cooper and this is my 4th. It is leased and I'm due to change it in September. The dealer hasn't been very helpful over this so I think my best plan now is to ask the Leasing company if I can get it checked out at Kwik Fit. Thanks again for your response.

If the battery is really drained it will take forever charging at 800ma and if the battery is on it's last legs 800ma may never charge it at all.
Getting it checked out at Kwik Fit on Saturday. If the battery has had it, then the leasing company will pay for a replacement and I'll be happy with that!!
