I hate speed bumps

9353 Views 17 Replies 15 Participants Last post by  North East Cooper S
Hi everybody

I can't possibly be alone in getting worked up about speed bumps as theres quite a lot of them round my way and the plastic trim under my front bumper keeps catching if I go any faster than 10mph.
Problem is I was considering fitting Eibach springs next week as there's too much fresh air between tyre and arch but I think this would only worsen my speed bump problem.

Can anyone with a dropped Mini share their experiences with me?

Oh, should have said, I'm only running 17" alloys with 205/40 rubber and Sports Suspension Plus

Cheers, Scott

don't go faster than 10mph then:rolleyes: :p ;)

seriously tho I have at least 20 speed ramps to get to my house which is a rite pain:(

basically if u drop it u have to go slower over them which I don't mind:)

p.s. that lip wears off after a bit anyway:p
I avoid them totally at all costs. I went over one last summer (it was a particularly harsh one btw) ,i managed to get two wheels over and heard this almighty crunchy noise coming from underneath the car. I must have hit the hump and grounded the car slightly.
Fortunately there was no damage.

I guess it depends on whether speed bumps and humps are regularly in your day to day commute. For me there not, only on the odd shopping trip! I just park somewher else!
i agree i hate them too but you have to respect them as they erm dont move!

just slow down and take them easy

my gripe is not speed humps its potholes which the stupid council dont sort out - at least with humps you have advance warning

i have eibachs, yes it scrapes but hey looking cool has its pitfalls! :D

scooby, what size are your (very nice!) rims?
I hate the things too - they are very un-MINI-friendly

And after having gone over one with a flat tyre (didnt know at the time) it made it worse :(
Only ones I have to deal with on a daily basis are some of those small yellow plastic, but really unfriendly, ones in the work carpark.
If they're wet they're very slippy and even at very low speed the TCS light comes on!!

Are those the short and high ones.... where you get a big lift and then slammed down to the ground half a second later?

Worst speed-bumps ever...!
What's the best way to go over the speed bumps which are like little islands in the road?

Currently I go over speedbumps v v v v v slowly i.e. about 2 miles an hour (yes, little old dears walk faster!) and with only one side going over the bump (so that the car tilts a bit to the side). For speed bumps which stretch across the road, I just go v v v v v slowly.
The speed bumps in the garage at my work already knocked one of my exhaust cans down. The bracket that held it in place was broken! The bumps cause such a severe drop even at incredibly low speeds. Luckily my MINI is still under warrenty and they took care of that, but it every time I go over the bumps I hear the exhaust cans start to rattle again. It is also very hard to go up an incline in the garage and hit a bump at low speeds with out stalling.

if u can put a wheel at either side of then, if they are too high u have to put one wheel on like u say:(
Here in France they have taken to RAISING the whole bloody intersection, which is even more of a pain. At any gate, I tend to angle the car and Crrrrraaaaawwwwwlllllll up. My neighbour lady told me the other day she had seen the slowest moving vehicle of all time in the village and that it was ole PKT RKT climbing over one the bloody things..... :)
it's a good thing race tracks don't have them.....

i like very much! am currently veering towards a similar style, and having seen yours, would definitely make me go for it- lovely car, lovely wheels! Good job ;)
Yep speed bumps are my nemisis.

My car is on 16 inch wheels and dropped on 30mm springs. It doesn't matter what I do over a speed bump, I just hear CRRRRRUUNNCCHHH every time :(

I even get it in multi-story carparks when coming down the levels :(

Still if I do it enough maybe I'll grind it down and the problem will eventually go away  :p
Being at stock height - I tend to gun the engine and try to get a little speed to launch off the humps - I like the wide flat-top ones the best.
Hear Hear! I work in an office park on the Waltham - Lincoln line (Mass) and I cut through Lincoln to go home when the highway is too busy. The town of Lincoln hates people cutting through and has a road with two big honkin' speed bumps -- the first ones I've seen that say 5MPH and they really are 5MPH. If I go 7MPH the MINI scrapes. It's amazing to see how many scrapes and gouges are in the pavement from cars bottoming out.

I have to come to an almost full stop to get over, which ****es the SUVs off behind me as they bomb thru at full speed -- and light up the treetops as their cars point northward :p
The small market town in the North East of England that i come from has never had a particular problem with speeding around the roads of it's two main housing estates. The local council has however decided that one of the housing estates requires 37 speed bumps on the estates 3 miles of access roads. Normally this would not be a problem to me as i live on the other estate, unfortunartely my girlfreind lives right slap in the middle of the new speed bump zone meaning that i must cross at least 15 speed bumps to reach her house from mine!!!

I don't have a problem with the speed restriction but the incresed wear and tear on vehicle is a tradgedy. The only good thing is that I have not yet ordered a MCS yet i'm still pottering round in an 02 reg Corsa SXI. When i do actually get the new car (fingers crossed for later this year) I will be very

Speed bumps cause more pollution and noise as traffic speeds up and slows down, besides the damage to vehicles.

Personally in find them a totally rubbish idea.

Other speed reduction measures are out there so if any council employees are reading this - USE 'EM
