The engine light behaviour you describe is normal, your spontaneous combustion less so.

The reason it works the way is to prove the system for warning you of a fault works. It's the same on your airbag, ABS etc. etc. When you have an MOT they should check that these warning lights illuminate with the ignition and go out after a few seconds.
