I have been looking at adverts for JCW's up for sale some say they have 210BHP some say 197BHP. They are not 2008 cars so are not factory JCW's.

Can anyone of you guys explain to me why the difference in the BHP figures?

Is one the R53 and the other R56?

Ok long answer alert.

R53 - Cooper S produced between 2001 & Nov 2006 - Supercharged. JCW version 210 bhp.

R56 - Cooper S produced Nov 2006 - Present - Turbocharged. There are two JCW versions of this; the dealer fit 192bhp, and the factory fit 212bhp. The 192 kit has been around for a while (sometime 07), whilst the factory 212 version was introduced mid 08. The factory 212 JCW is a model in it's own right and does not carry Cooper S badging. It also has various other JCW upgrades over the 192bhp model, such as brakes and suspension.

Hope this helps.

The R numbers are explained here

There are actually two versions for the R53. It started off somewhere around 197bhp and was later updated to 210bhp.

The R56 factory model has the same suspension options as the standard S.

I test drove both the Cooper S and the Factory JCW earlier today at the only Mini dealer in Western Australia and all I can say is WOW!!!!

The JCW is an amazing car. I just need to find how I can get the necessary funds together before I return to the UK in 9 months time!

It depends on how you define horsepower ...

From A Dictionary of Units of Measurement:

brake horsepower (bhp)
the effective power output of an engine, sometimes measured as the resistance the engine provides to a brake attached to the output shaft. See horsepower.
horsepower (hp)
a unit of power representing the power exerted by a horse in pulling. The horsepower was defined by James Watt (1736-1819), the inventor of the steam engine, who determined after careful measurements that a horse is typically capable of a power rate of 550 foot-pounds per second. This means that a horse, harnessed to an appropriate machine, can lift 550 pounds at the rate of 1 foot per second. Today the SI unit of power is named for Watt, and one horsepower is equal to approximately 745.6999 watts. Outside the U.S., the English word "horsepower" is often used to mean the metric horsepower, a slightly smaller unit.
metric horsepower
a unit of power, defined to be the power required to raise a mass of 75 kilograms at a velocity of 1 meter per second. This is approximately 735.499 watts or 0.986 32 horsepower. The unit is known in French as cheval-vapeur (ch), in Dutch as paardekracht (pk), and in German as Pferdestärke (PS).

Manufacturer's horsepower ratings are those at the crank and NOT at the wheels.

MCS "power" ratings:

Useful comparison chart would be perfect if torque figures could be added too
