One of the last visual modifications I've wanted to do is window tints.

Decided upon sun blinds though after seeing some in various threads about tints.
And the beauty is, they're about half the price of tints (although someone always knows a Dave that can do proper tints for £30), and can be removed and/or sold later on :)

I've removed the rear one now though, as I have a rear facing dashcam, and being so close to the blind meant it couldn't see!!!

Expensive month.
Insurance due, road tax due and two new tyres put on, Continental Sport Contact 5.

Put the rear tyres onto the front, so the new tyres go onto the rear :)


Got some new centre caps as my old ones are bubbling


Put the new centre caps on, wheels had to be removed!!!!
The old ones were genuine Mini was, as are the new ones.

More expense...
Some 2nd hand JCW R112 Cross Spoke Challenge wheels, in immaculate condition.

Expensive, but they have almost new Continental Sport Contact 5's on them. Only thing I'm annoyed at is I bought 2 brand new Continental Sport Contact 5's three weeks ago for the impending MOT.
They also have centre caps in very good condition, and I just bought new ones a couple of weeks ago too!!!

14th November (2016)
Had to use the car last week due to a bus strike, 15 mile journey into work was perfect.
Half a mile into the journey home and the temperature needle goes up, pull over, let car cool down, check coolant and the tank is very very low. Front bumper was wet underneath.
No steam, no noise, no loss of power (although I was driving in traffic).

Was going to get the missus to bring the coolant I have in the garage at home. But as it happened all of a sudden I figured it'd just all escape again, so...


Can't do anything until weekend.


20th November
Radiator now off...

All pipes looked dry, no obvious signs of a leak, just the very bottom of the radiator was wet.

21st November
Order a new radiator.
Also noticed a 'dent' on the hose that runs from the top of the radiator to the thermostat, it wasn't punctured but didn't want to go to the trouble of putting a new radiator on then have this hose rupture in a years time.


24th November
Collected new hose from local dealership.


New radiator also arrived, I slotted the old fan onto it, didn't fit radiator as I'll need access to be able to fit the hose to the thermostat.


As the hose runs to the thermostat, thought it about time I fitted the one I bought 2 years ago :)


Upon planning removal of the thermostat, I saw the manifold air pressure sensor only held on by one bolt, other was sheared (thermostat must have been changed prior to my ownership), and the bolt is rusted on that it's never going to come out.

25th November
Order a new bracket, plan on using a Dremmel to remove sensor bolt.

26th November
Remove all the gubbins needed to access the thermostat.


Take the opportunity to clean the Dave F again.


27th November
Fit new hose and thermostat (without torquing up the bolts as I don't have the new bracket yet - I'm told it'll take a week to get from Germany, how a whole week? by horse?).


28th November
Attempt to Dremmel the sensor bolt results in part of it breaking off. Now that thermostat hose is in place I can finally fit the radiator.

29th November
Order a new manifold air pressure sensor. The old one would probably be fine with just one bolt (as it had been for years!!) but I may as well do the job properly

3rd December
New sensor arrives and I collect the new bracket....happy days in sight at last...




New sensor & bracket (& bolts) fitted.


It started to get dark at this point, so I just fill up with coolant and leave the bleeding until tomorrow when light.
But, after an hour or so I come back to coolant dripping on the floor from the offside bottom of the radiator, upon closer inspection it's leaking from the top, but the rear (where the hose connects) is completely dry.


I also bought new radiator rubber feet and the foam that sits on the top and bottom - turns out that these come with the radiator anyway


NOT HAPPY!!!
Brand new expensive oem radiator and it's leaking. This is the second time a brand new BMW/MINI part has been faulty immediately, not impressed!!!
And, just like the fuel pump, my local BMW/MINI are being a pain.
Although the radiator was bought online from Cotswold, it can be took back and replaced by any dealership....except....just like the fuel pump, they refuse to do so unless they see the part FITTED to my car.
I offer to bring the radiator to them and pour a jug of water in it and they can watch it leak out, but no.
I explain that I can't drive the car to them.
I ask if they'll cover the cost of getting the car towed to them and the radiator is deemed to be faulty....no.

Once again, consumer law simply does not apply when dealing with BMW/MINI dealerships!!!!!

In the end, eventually, Cotswold send out a replacement :)

11th December
Replacement radiator arrives, fit it...no leaks, car is back on the road :)

The Continental Sport Contact 5's that I bought prior to getting new wheels got put to good use, the wife's car has gone from standard 16" wheels to some 17" ones from an EVO VI...

This saved her having to get 3 new tyres for her 16" wheels.
And she needed bigger wheels for a possible future big brake upgrade.

Hatch has been getting gradually worse over the years.
This is how far it opens itself


So bought new gas struts from eBay for £13.99 (the pair).
Normally I'd go for quality oem, but BMW certainly are not quality. Having bought TWO BRAND NEW FAULTY items from them in the past (not parts that have *eventually* failed, they failed immediately!!)


And now, no more banging my head putting stuff in the boot :)

Nothing exciting, just an oil change.
12 months / 4,244 miles since the last one.
I don't reset the cars service interval, all these oil changes I do are between proper services - of which the car has one needed 1 in my 4.5 year ownership!! Just goes to show that "full service history" on modern cars means absolutely nothing!!


The last two pieces of plastic trim have been replaced.
Tired of having to keep using bumper trim solution on these old ones every month.

A little bit more today (Feb 2017), transmission oil. Last changed 3 years (only 12,000 miles) ago (wow, I used to do 12,000 a year!!!).


Oil actually looked quite golden as it was pouring out, but looks black in my tub


Cleaner than it was when I bought the car and give it it's first gear oil change at 76K. Shoddy BMW service schedule!!!

The Range Rover whose driver was incapable of looking out of his windscreen...


Poor guy who took the brunt of the impact, front end damage due to being shunted into me, the liquid on the ground is all his coolant...


Rear end damage of the Astra van, safe to say it'll be written off due to it's age/value...

My cracked Aero rear bumper, bought brand new 3 years ago, unfortunately these cannot be bought new anymore...

Smaller wheel arch gap on nearside, this is due to a bracket that's welded onto the end of the crash bar be being slightly bent (and one of the two welds has broken)...

Exhaust backboxes also pushed back as they're not sitting right in the hangers...


Past the exhaust backboxes, the pipes have been pushed close to the rear trailing arms...


Bumper: I'm looking at getting a mint 2nd hand one rather than fixing mine as these bumpers flex quite a bit, so I'm not sure how well any repair would stand up to that. Cost of getting a 2nd hand one shouldn't be much more than the repair cost anyway. Both options would require prep and paint by bodyshop.

Exhaust: I'm wanting a brand new exhaust. I simply don't want someone belting seven bells of s*** out of my £500 stainless exhaust to put it right. If it were a bog standard mild steel exhaust, fine, but it's not.

Crash bar: Not sure how much someone would charge to re-weld the bracket, but the whole crash bar can be had on fleabay for £25 delivered so I think that'll be the best option.

Tailgate: Not sure if it can be fixed as access behind the dent is limited (double-skinned). Would probably need repainting too. Considering a 2nd hand tailgate, but would have to be from a car with an Aspen White roof and also have a Cooper S spoiler as transferring mine onto old tailgate isn't an easy task as they're glued down. Also, 2nd hand tailgate would require a brand new high-level brake light thanks to BMW not selling the gasket separately.

New bits for the car repair.
Brand new rear crash bar (£29 from fleabay), probably cheaper than driving to somewhere to re-weld the bracket on the old one)


£160 worth of parts!
The 'Cooper S' and 'Mini' badges together are over £50

And I have to say, build quality has gone down considerably since getting one 4 years ago.

Before today...


The interchangeable brackets (for pre-facelift & facelift) aren't even straight...


Newer pipe design looks cheap compared to my older one...


I initially thought the impact must have pushed the whole exhaust back (I now suspect just the welded on tips) as the brackets didn't look to be in the hangers very central. It turns out, after buying new hangers, that this is how the hangers are designed!!!


All fitted, a lot more fettling required compared to the older one but managed it...
(still with the cracked (and now melted due to driving with the exhaust tips halfway under the car). If anyone has a mint R53 rear Aero bumper I have cash waiting)

After 5 years of being on the car, the bonnet stripes decided to all of a sudden go tatty.
So off they came...


New discs & pads for the rear.
Plenty of life in the 5 year old Mintex 1144's but I'm putting Ferodo DS2500 for less dust and to match the fronts.


And while fitting the rear discs & pads, had a tough time with the lower sliders on both calipers, SOOOO tight inside the rubber bush (sliders in good condition and no crud inside the bushes), so got these to go on now...


Failed to install the new calipers, couldn't get the handbrake cables out of the old calipers.
Not wanting my new £150 brake pads to be ruined by the lower slider pins seizing, I removed the bushes and found Pablo Escobar has been hiding his merchandise in my calipers

Car's still not completely fixed.
New exhaust put on 6 weeks ago.
Bumper and hatch won't be getting sorted until early November, earliest the bodyshop could fit me in.
But I did put the new crash bar on. Only issue with the old one was that one of the welds on the bracket had broke.

Had to crack on with rear calipers, figured I'd have to get new handbrake cables as there's no way the old ones are budging from the calipers.


I tried a blow torch on the area (not easy though with lots of rubber and brake lines), lots of hammering from above. So in the end I cut the cable




New ones installed, I've since painted them black too


Hanbrake cables were actually pretty easy, and no need to remove exhaust heatshield :)


Used a household wire/cable threader, passed from inside. Then from the underneath, duct taped the end to the end of the handbrake cable


Then pull, with a bit of jiggling


All nice and shiny, no doubt it'll be all rusted up in a years time!

And it also appears one of my 4 year old top mounts will need replacing.
Luckily as I have upper and lower tower defenders, no mushroomed strut towers :)
I've not hit any single particular major pot hole, but there's been a few nasty ones. Roads in Yorkshire are abysmal, we need the Romans to come over and invade again.
It's only 1-2mm but still :angry:

Drivers side, not fine


They're genuine BMW/MINI top mounts, they cost £100 each.
Absolute ***** they are.

My R53 is up for some serious pampering, the original owner had the paint protection put on and after a few serious stone chips that shattered the topcoat due to it being so hard. The paint protection is coming off and taking the clear coat with it and I cant afford a respray at the moment to a quick and nasty patch up is the only solution

Great great thread. From 1st post to last, its like watching a full season of a tv episode! I felt tired (with that much of work) and subconsciously touch my back pocket if my wallet is still there. Hahaha.
