had a car in today to have a look at guy paid someone online £500 to do stems seals off a ebay link , as cure to smoking when left on idle and after dragging down a hill and out foot on throttle,, so had it done and was better he said but still burnt oil badly etc,, reason he came to me was its now got a bad misfire due to the oil crud that was cleaned off when stem seals leaked a bit has gone hard and valve seats leak and cause a misfire, and still using a lot of oil and 02 sensor code etc, the trouble with these engines is not just the stem seals its the rings as well and to be honest need to be treated all in one go correctly , ie head off all valves out cleaned and relap seats and check guides and then fit different piston rings DO NOT USE BMW NITRIDE RINGS AS ARE RUBBISH, I noticed a few adverts for rebuilt engines and they are still fitting the bmw om rings ie made of plastic and will end up same way after a few years if lucky, my point here before thinking getting a free lunch you really do need to understand the process involved to do these engines right,, and that a 60k plus engine will need rings and stem seals and timing chain full kits etc,

It would be a good idea to state which engine you are talking about mike any many won't know.
n12b16 and n12b14 and n16 and n18 and very n14 engines all the petrol prince engines , as stem seal failure tends to be due more towards other issues with oil burning and stretched timing chain and running lean or run low on oil at some point,
