Kenwood ICE and MFSW?

2307 Views 7 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  mikeythemini
Hi guys,
I'm about to order my cooper chili, and i wanted cruise control. Well i better get the MFSW then, right?
What i want to do is take my Kenwood 6070R head unit and 10 stack CD player from my current car and put it into the mini as i dont really feel that i want to pay upwards of 450 Quid for the pleasure of BMW audio.
The only problem i forsee is that the audio controls on the wheel wont work with this setup? is this right? what can i do to make them work? anything?

As I said at the start, the main reason for wanting the MFSW was for cruise control, so i guess i can live without the stereo controls if i have to.

Thanks for any input in advance

I've got some good news and some errr not so good news, well unless thins have changed.

The wireing on the Mini is the same as the Beemer 3 series. Now I got a Sony MD unit for my mums beemer, and when the car arrived, what do you know the standard spec had been increased, so it had the MFSW. So I had the radio fitted and asked about an adapter cable that would work with the steering wheel. Anyway the guy hadn't heard of one, but found one for £30. What he did say tho, was that I was very lucky, as appaerntly his supplier told him that the only Head units that work with BMW MFSW are sony's.

Of course that is only if things haven't changed, that was 18 months ago and I've not seen any other adapters on sale.

My advice. If you've got a kenwood MD played I'll give you a swap for my Sony MD, as I like Kenwood (depending on model) and I'm not gettin the MFSW.

.....on second thoughts no one but Sony do an MD Changer so I better not do a swap :( Sorry!

See if you can get a trade in for a sony?

I asked myself the same question when I ordered my mini - I'd just bought an MP3 headunit! Doh

I did some checking out and it worked out cheaper (and better IMHO) to get the Kenwood fitted FOC by the dealer and buy a Kenwood remote control and attach it behind the wheel myself - dead easy.

Now I can control more of the kenwood features and I dont have silly buttons for cruise control.:D :D :D

Plus I used the money for the wheel to buy 4 S-Spke wheels - bargain! :p

I can post a pic of the remote if you like?

Can you do it for me aswell, as I love the kenwood stuff.

Do you mean can I put the picture up of the remote?

I'll have to nick the digital camera from work but I'll get it up ASAP.:D

Mickey......

Can you provide a bit more info on the kenwood thingy???

as i said in the first post ages ago, i have the kenwood IR remote at the moment, tho for neatness, the original buttons would be better.

what is the "learning remote adaptor -55.00"? is this another IR device or does it use the wiring looms?

any additional info would be really appreciated. (e.g. cost, part no, supplier (you i assume!!:D ), etc..)

Thanks

GErry;)

It is an IR device
It is a small box that hides behind the stereo, 1 wire then connects to the factory mfsw wire at the column (needs chopping)
it then has a live and earth, then you just mount the tiny IR transmitter.
It basically converts the signal from the mfsw into IR.
Part number SWI-X
price 55 inc vat
