LSD or not??

Has anyone not spec'd LSD on their S and then wished that they had?
If I don't spec it what will I be missing?

I'm asking as I'm having difficultly trying to get a demo that has LSD on. I took out a MCS last week and loved it and didn't mind the Torque steer and soon got used to driving it.

Yesterday i took out a JCW, and somehow I felt less involved driving it

All help and advice gratefully received :)

I think that they only serve to improve the cars handling. The factory option is not that expensive so a worthy box to tick!

The Works model has DTC with EDLC (Electronic Differential Lock Control) which will be an option (alternative to LSD) on other models in December.
I didn't spec the LSD and regretted it. It's mostly a problem accelerating out of a corner in second gear - the wheels spin very easily. I'm sure the £100 option would be saved in rubber. Spec it if you like to drive enthusiastically (within the law of course!).

The LSD should get you more involved if anything. Higher corner speed etc

Worth the extra.

I ordered my S before the LSD was available, then later went on to fit the JCW tuning kit.

The car only really struggles for grip in wet and extreme weather when you won't be driving flat out anyway. In the dry there's no problem.

Go for LSD, it is worth it and adds value to the car. As someone else on this forum pointed out, as factory installed option it is not expensive at all.

I personally didn't get the LSD extra added onto my MCS. For a couple of reason... I didn't really notice the comparison between one car I test drove with LSD and another without. Also, the saleman said it wasnt worth it. Having been discouraged, I put my trust in him (having been a track day expert) and havent regretted it at all. Any reason to knock off £100 for other extras I wanted was good to me :D.

I guess it's down to personal choice.

I'm confused now.. The car I took out without it on had torque steer when you accelerated hard..its a shame no dealer has a car with LSD on for me to try out :(
I really don't know what to spec atm..this is my stumbling block with LSD.

Tracie, Really it's a no brainer..! It improves traction on hard accelleration at a small cost. No negatives albeit finding a used car with it on!

Buy an LSD!
all FWD high performance cars should have them (especially turbos)

It transforms the car, especially in the wet. My MCS literally handles like a 4wd car!
I can chuck it into any corner at almost any speed and just power out. You really feel the LSD working to put down the power - its great!

Also you can turn off the TCS/DSC and paint two nice black lines in the tarmac :)

The only slight negative is that on some unevan surfaces under hard acceleration, the steering wheel can kick back slightly but to me its all part of the appeal of drving a proper car!

Better than a demo, and it has LSD!

MINI : Low mileage R56 Cooper S Chili with JCW bodykit

If you are interested give me a shout and I'll send you more pics etc. :)
Don't have LSD but wish i did in this weather
Before buying an MCS last year I had a test drive using an MCS without LSD. I noticed there was a lot of torque steer when accelerating hard out of roundabouts i.e. when the wheels were not straight.

In July 07 I took delivery of a new MCS and one of the extras I bought was LSD. On the same stretch of road where I had torque steer problems with the demo car I had no problems with my new MCS. The traction in wet/dry conditions is excellent and you can put the power on without any wheel spin. Best £100 buy for value.......I'm now waiting to see how much it helps when snow is about.

Before getting the MCS I had a Civic Type-R, wheel spin was a big problem as LSD was not available, and I had to replace the front tyres every 7-8K miles. My MCS with LSD has done 9K miles and the front tyres still have plenty of tread

I am considering LSD too but the price list and configurator says it is £160, not £100!

The reason for the higher price is Mini have replaced the current mechanical LSD with an electronic version which has certain advantages. The extra £160 would be well spent.
Just yesterday I spent the day at a racetrack. My car doesnt have LSD but i regret not having it (it was not possible to spec it at time of order). It is a kart track so you can basicaly do all the driving in second gear.
Anyway it was almoust impossible to put the power to the road...the wheels span after each corner and the result is a lot of blue smoke, hehe, but no grip...

So I think you should decide what kind of driving you will be doing and then decide. if you dont plan to do any hard driving you dont need it, but it sure cant harm. :)
For the extra grip and improved handling LSD is definitely worth having, it will also increase it's 2nd hand value
Re-opening an old thread ..

.. as I have just read the article on the R53 Mini Cooper S in Performance Car Magazine.

It states there twice through the article, that if you find a POST July 04 Facelifted R53 WITH the Chilli Pack, it includes LSD.

Is this correct? As mine is a late 04 Cooper S with the Chilli Pack, does that mean it has LSD?

Can someone please let me know if what is stated in this article is fact?

Thanks!
