Mike, can you do me a favour please - do you have by any chance a video or sound clip of a healthy higher mileage n18 engine please ? I have bought a 2010 Cooper S with 83k on it. Engine sounds noisy (tappetty). Changed tensioner, oil and filter etc recently. Car runs great and I am enjoying it but a little worried about how noisy the engine is, even at idle. Local mechanic says they all sound like this and not to worry. Car uses around 1ltr of oil in 1000 miles, which I read as being quite normal. I have another late 2010, normal cooper lci with I think the n16 engine and that isn’t as noisy. Any help much appreciated! Cheers, Guy

the n18 engines are direct injection so have more noises that n16 as that is port injection, no dont have any sound bite of a good one to hand
will add if that engine has not had a timing chain already then its well due one,, dont believe all the lies dealers put out there about the n18 dont have same issues as as early engines as they really do its same chain kits on all of them until changed over when they recently put 2,0 litre bmw own engine in cooper s and even that ha some hand me down problems from the 3 series petrols

Thanks Mike, appreciate the advice. I will look into getting chain set replaced as it hasn’t been done to my knowledge. What would be a ballpark figure cost wise for this job at a decent independent please ? I am near Newcastle so too far from you unfortunately
depends on how much needs doing,
on a 60.000 miles prince engine no matter whether its a n14 or n18 or non turbo n12 or n16 is where i advise all customers I have to treat it to a basic chain kit,,, ie new genuine chain tensioner, all the guides, deffo bottom sprocket, and new chain,, the chain kits from factory are made by febi bilsteen, FAI genuine chain kits are as good,, for this you would be looking around the £800 and should include new stretch bolts and oil filter change,
if car on around 100k chances are the vanos sprockets will not make it another 60,000 miles so replace them,, i buy them genuine from Peugeot main dealers and are £54 each,, ocean bmw want £360 for same part made in same factory,, main dealers for a full kits all sprockets around £1000 seems to be the norm,,

Hi there Mike I have seen people are really singing your praises on here and I need your help.
I took my mini clubman s to a garage today as there has been white smoke coming out of the engine and exhaust and it has been burning through oil, they said I need a new rocker cover and I have timing chain noise.
What do you think I should do?
And how much would you charge to fix the oil problem and the chain?
these engines around 8 to 10 year old have stem seals in head go hard and cause oil burning and smoke, , they also barely keep a timing chain for 60,000 miles before stretching, I got one n at mo n16 2011 that has 28k on clock with stem seal issues and vanos issues due to being sat around to much this has rust residue in crankcase , would always air n side of caution if a garage is playing the guessing game and come up with rocker cover, seldom are the cover not saying never are,, more likely engine has a lot of crankcase pressure due to ring blow past , if your rocker cover has been smoke tested and failed and has leaks then would not hurt to change it it , heads up only after market covers any good are FEBI genuine brand, and FAI , dont buy the very cheap ebay ones ,, as they cause more issues than not,
