HELP PLEASE MY MINI COOPER 02 IS SAD COOLANT NEEDS FILLING EVERYDAY BEING WINTER TOTAL NIGHTMARE,MY FAN HAS BEEN STAYING ON CONSTANT TURNED THAT OFF COMPLETLY BECAUSE IT WAS STAYING ON ,NOW I HAVE NO HEAT THE CAR TEMP IS STAYING ON HALF BUT I HAVE NO HEAT WHEN I PUT BLOWERS ON ANY HELP PLEASE :angry:

OK, first things first... Please don't use all caps because it looks like you are yelling.

As for your problem, we need to sort a few things out. First, adding coolant every day is not good and it means that you have a leak. This can lead to the car overheating and cause a huge amount of damage. It can be a few different things but it needs to be resolved.

As for the heater, it is likely the heater core that has gone and needs to be replaced. That being said, I would focus on the top item first.

sorry about the caps only ever had escort had old style mini,could you tell me where the heater core is don't fancy taking the car to bmw cost too much,i just thought the coolant was going fast with not having the fan on.The guy i bought the car off said the fan works but stays on would just need a senor not sure where this is,looks like i might have to take the car to a garage only problem is they just rip women off no mechanic thanks for reply

The heater core is located in the cabin under the dash. In order to change it, you have to drain the coolant and then remove it. It is not a hard job but may not be a home mechanic job.

Hi milkeyjack - welcome to Mini2

It sounds like your radiator has a leak or there is a coolant leak elsewhere

Is it an original radiator?

Inspect the radiator closely for signs of crusty white discharge usually at the edges or seams. Also under the car for areas of obvious leakage. If its leaking lots it shouldnt be too hard

The heater will not work without adequate amounts of coolant or a leaking radiator and this is why no heat is coming.

I would get this looked at pretty soon as you dont want the engine overheating
Where are you based? Personally can recommend 1320 autos they are based in Saint Neots near Cambridge, a new radiator was about 150 quid fitted with new coolant

Hi thanks for your reply it is the original radiator had the car booked in today at my local garage but no joy they can not find the problem.i was using quite alot of water because i have been using my heater quite alot with the cold weather also to keep temp down because my fan has been disconneted,it was staying on and not going of the guy i bought the car did mention the fan problem but just lately with the cold weather snap ive been using more water than normal.The garage could not find any leaks he did say it might be the head but i hope it's not.thanks for your reply i am based in gateshead tyne&wear might have to book the car in at bmw.temp staying in the middle thanks

OK, we need to clear a few things up. Generally the "fan" that gets stuck on is the power steering pump fan and not the cooling. In fact, I don't know of a cooling fan that has ever stuck on (could be wrong) but generally when they fail, they are off.

Secondly, the MINI has a closed cooling system which means that you shouldn't be losing any water (a little over a long perid of time) out of the system. If you have to add coolant day to day then you have a serious leak. Generally three places tend to leak... The radiator, the coolant bottle will crack and leak or the thermostat housing. Radiators are rare to be honest, and it is usually one of the other two. If there is a leak then there is likely a bubble in the system which can prevent coolant from moving throughout the system thus no heat in the cabin. This can also lead to the car overheating and cracking the head.

1. Get the leak plugged and the fan fixed of you will be in for expensive repairs.
2. After that you can troublshoot the heating system easier.

Did they pressurize the coolant sytem and look for leaks?

As DaFlake quite rightly says there has to be a leak somewhere if your topping up coolant daily.

Sometimes leaks only show or happen when the sytem pressurises itself. On a cooper the filler bottle is not a tight presure cap like the MCS and the system usually takes what it needs from the reservoir tank when the car is off.

I had a fairly substantial leak in the radiator that was extremely obvious once the sytem was manually pressurized

Also even with very little coolant in the system the engine temp didnt rise above the middle mark, but the fan would be on alot especially when you turn the engine off.

Hi heater working fine there was a wire under the footwell ive must have knocked it with my foot,just the water issue now thanks for the help

Hi all back on again can anyone tell me if the air con is off would this affect the engine coolant fan ?
also if the fan was not in use, would this cause me to use more coolant than normal worried in case i've done the head.
no smoke oil normal don't no if the car is overheating just putting the heater on constant just in case i overheat the engine with the fan being out of order.The fan does work but it stays on constant so i've had to unplug the fan otherwise the battery will run flat any help please two people have looked at my car no joy i think next course of action is to get water test or gas test.i will kepp you all posted thanks for any help please:confused:

thanks for the reply the ac needs new gas that might have been the problem the fan does works but because the air con was off that will explain why the fan was just running constant i hope.The mechanic did not have a clue he's not sure about mini cooper.Thanks for the response

I would recommend getting the Haynes manual for the car. Even if you don't feel like doing the work yourself you can at least have an informed conversation with a mechanic.

My sister in law had a similar problem to you and needed a new thermostat cover and overflow tank cap. However it could be a whole range of things, as mentoned above. The thing that MINIs have which I hadn't seen on other cars is bleed valves for the coolant, so I guess it is possible to think you have a leak when you have an air lock which may or may not clear itself. The Haynes manual spells all this stuff out with clear pictures and enables you to test out a mechanics knowledge.

hi back on today glad to say my cars head has not gone,but had get the garage to have a look surposed to be £56 for the first hour but what did they do strip my car down according to the garage this is normal to find the problem but what they forgot to do was phone after the hour to say it was going to take longer now i have been charged £140 just to check what was wrong they never found the coolant problem but radaitor fan was not working this i knew,so now being charged £305 + vat to fit and replace fan well hope this solves the problem was told this might be the cause of coolant loss .
car back tomorrow i hope i will keep you posted every little helps.
