Hi good morning.

Have an issue here. P0012 camshaft position timing over retarded

Changed both vanos valves
Changed oil return.
Found broke crank case vent pipe

Car runs great every know and then revs drop and start hunting and get a fine engine ticking noise

Could anyone shed any light

Engine is n12b16a 1.6 mini cooper 2008

might be the oil rings in end of camshaft lobe the ears snap and when do bleed off oil pressure , could also be low oil pressure, or the non return valve under the vanos solonoid on the head

Same issue I am having with ours I am afraid.

To supplement what Mike has said above, is the oil fresh and new, with a decent clean oil filter? If you clear the code, does it come back after 2 drive cycles (that is the code set criteria) or does it take several drives for it to appear?

see this a lot so much can cause such code s hence why when I do refresh engines i do full chain kit and the oil rings in camshafts so then know for sure its not a mechanical issue going forward, also never fit cheap ebay oil solenoids they are crap on all levels and bring another level of suspect parts ,, many turno out to be a chain of events , oi solonoid causes a short and that can effect ecu and damage it, same as harness, also thermostat shares a live feed and when goes high resistance can also cause misfires and timing related code such as that, hence why i only fit febi housing these days ,, not in over 7 years since started using them have i had one go faulty ,

many thanks Mike, being able to tap in to that many years of experience is golden for this forum 👍

The Pierburgs are in ours, just waiting for the ECU Testing report to come back (currently at "Working On It"). The harness (our source of the short I feel) is repaired and there in virtually no resistance on the wires - happy with that. Piercing holes have been repaired with the liquid electrical tape, and all wrapped back up with the proper tape - fingers crossed

good sign they working on it tends to mean found a problem , its when get the email cant be fixed the fun begins, at this point might be worth sending it to bba remen maybe for a second view on it before only other path of a cloned ecu,,

check the cam timing.... it might actually be retarded

I have changed the none return valve. Its just had new timing chain and head gasket using the correct locking tools.. changed vanos valves fraom spare engine I have









































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































































All I found was crank case breather was split.

I am surprised it did not throw a code about circuit high/low if I am honest

Hunting/stalling could easily be attributed to vacuum leaks (and don't I know that one !!!!!)

When it was reconnected did anything improve?

the PCV pipe will cause hunting/surge and stalling as it will cause an unmetered air leak

knock sensor would just put a code in and possibly EML I expect

maybe edit that post and delete out the additional lines below your first?
