For the revs changing this can be a sign of an intake air leak.
For the converter getting red hot my first thought is it is partially blocked but an over supply of fuel is also a possibility. A leaking injector can put excessive fuel into the engine and this will be ignited/burned in the converter.
The red hot catalytic converter is a pretty serious problem that if not dealt with promptly can ruin the converter assuming it is not already ruined. While these run hot (IIRC around 600C) they can be ruined if they get too much hotter.
