Does anyone know the details on the navigation system?
Who is manufacturer?
Does it use CDs?
Can the maps be updated?
Is it the same for the US and UK etc?
How does it rate against 3rd party nav systems?
Is it good value?

Thanks,

Does anyone know the details on the navigation system? YES
Who is manufacturer? SIEMENS / VDO- formerly VDO, formerly Philips
Does it use CDs? OH yes - just 1
Can the maps be updated? At the right cost per CD - of course
Is it the same for the US and UK etc? The design is the same but the maps are country specific
How does it rate against 3rd party nav systems? Its best in class. You can have split screen, points north, points the way you are going. Its colour (sorry color). Its fast. Its widescreen. Its the same as BMW Bord Monitor 3, 5 and 7 series for example - test drive one.
Is it good value? If you use it for your job, I would say yes, as a gimmick - probably a big boys toy, but depends how much cash you have.

You can probably sort yourself out with TV with it as well. It will be a Japan option, but if you pester them enough!!!

Thanks for the info! It is on my possible options list and I have been trying to make a decision. You lucky bastards. I am still waiting to even SEE a Cooper let alone a Cooper S fully loaded.

Luckily none of us yanks has to worry about money. We are all loaded to the gills with cash now that the gov is actually giving us back money in the form of tax rebates. :)
I heard a vicious rumour that the top spec. VDO colour nav. unit is actually a rebadged Clariion unit!
I don\'t know about the ethics of this forum but, I must say

BOLLOCKS (sorry for the bad languague)

We would not go near Clarion with a barge pole!! VDO have led the way with Navigation for some time. They took the work from Philips and have really focussed on it as their core business. I can tell you its a VDO system designed specifically for BMW group.

So stop winding me up.

OH and the US. MINI testing will soon start in the US. They have their first COOPER S arriving soon, so keep your eyes out. I hear America is quite small and you might bump into it - well in NY anyway.

Did you know President Clinton was the US president who did it between the Bushes?? Just a thought!!

Cheap petrol, cheap taxes (all of them) cheap houses, cheap cigarrettes, good wages blah blah blah - hope mini doesn\'t make it to you lucky people!!!!!

So is the system use a cd or dvd for the map information?
Is it touch screen for data entry?
Can you control anything else in the car from it; eg, cd changer, temp controls, etc?

anyone have any additional information on the plug & play electrical system? can i install my cell phone hands free.
ICEman,
can you give the model# of your Clarion-system-components? Because I'm looking for a system which you described (motorised screen and single DIN).
thank you
