Hi guys. As title just filled in most of profile. Recently bought a smart R53 Cooper S Checkmate which I like very much. Fancied one for a while after running a 2005 One for 2 years as a runabout, also wife has a 2010 Cooper S. I just fancied the supercharged version, and the smaller R53. It’s a mint Checkmate and I’m very happy with it. Thought I’d join here to find out a bit more about the cars

welcome nice to have two different gen cooper s in family makes you realise just how different they are in some ways

Cheers. Yes the cars are very, very different. When I first bought the 2010 car I wasn’t aware how different they would be, they look so similar. Mainly it’s a bigger car, and feels it, although the engines are extremely different too. 2010 is vastly better built however I much prefer the Checkmate engine, and the small car feel, even if it drinks like a fish.

By the way, do you know the answer to my ‘Checkmate paint’ question in the Cooper S sub forum?
R53's are a far more involving car, punching well above their weight, very direct and can be made to have a nicer balance without changing the looks much at all. Worth the extra to have them on the road.

below link shows paint code location, failing that ring bmw/mini with reg number they will give you the codes for it all off their screen,,
i'm still playing silly buggers with mine with breather system and oil getting past the pcv valve and ending up in bottom of inlet or intake to turbo depending on where the pressure is ie neg or positive i put new rings in it and used the latest spec n18 ones worked a treat got next to zero crankcase pressure now and seams this help to push oil out the breather pipes,, so double sealed catch can it is mounted as high as can for oil to struggle going uphill as such.. prince engines have so many issue with bad design almost like they want it to fail after 3 years,, its a must do job saves them from alter blow ups and piston damage,, good link below about breathers on n14 turbo engines
