New York / Washington DC Trip Speccin'..............

We have been Speccin’ a trip to NY and the Washington DC area next September.

It will be a flying visit, only around 8 days or so – we have been to NY quite a few times before, and the main purpose is to visit Denises brother and sister in law who hopefully will have a happy, healthy addition to their family by then.

We know NY pretty well, and have the relations for guidance – don’t know much about Washington though – would appreciate some pointers from locals please?

1.Any recommendations on hotels to stay in relation to central positioning for attractions? Happy to spend up to around $ 350 – 400 per night.

2.What are the ‘must-see’ things to do in DC, bearing in mind we will only have 3 or 4 days there?

3.Anything else we should know?

All information appreciated………

I'll bump this now the US guys are awake............:D
For hotels, barring local recommendations, I use Trip Reservations to get an idea of the area. Then, you can usually get a better price by going to the hotel directly to book.

I'll also defer to locals on sight seeing recommendations, but if Denise would like some bargain shopping you can't beat Potomac Mills Mall. :)

Aiden, you know Fuzzy and I plan on driving up to meet you both. :)
Oh, Aidens coming to NY??!! I might have to get you to go on a shopping trip with me :p ;)

Thanks Sherry, and yep, I'd love to meet you both...........:)
Aside from the more well-known sites in the DC area, a little known museum is the medical museum located at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center on Georgia Avenue. It used to be located down on the Mall but is truly worth a visit. Essentially, it contains preserved bodies (and parts) as well as skeletal remains from the civil war era still bearing the bullets that inflicted the fatal wounds. It is absolutely fascinating and is put in the context of the advances medicine (particularly battlefield medicine) has made over the years. Admission is free although you do have to go through security as it's on a U.S. Army base.

Other than that, I really recommend that you tour the monuments on the Mall at night as they are much more impressive then and doesn't cut into your day. I too, am a Potomic Mills junkie as that's where the cloest IKEA and Lego Store Outlet is.

Thanks Dave, sounds good..............:)
From DC make the short drive up to Baltimore to the Cheesecake Factory and try the banana cream cheesecake. You'll thank me later. :)
I do like cheesecake...............:D

What type of stuff do you want to see???? Museum's, traffic back-ups, how far out into the hither lands do you wish to go??? There is just so much to see in the DC area, Annapolis is beautiful, it just so much to do & see, you need to set some guide lines.....

Got any specific dates yet? ? ? ?

I guess the usual monuments, everything we see on the West Wing ! :D

Should be there from around 26th August till 2nd September or so - we were going to come a week later, but i guess there will be ceremonies on for September 11th, so we assumed it might be very busy security wise, so best to stay clear?

I guess first trip, we should just do the usual touristy things? :)
All of the major museums and monuments are on the Mall in Washington, including the White House and the US Capitol building...the closest and nicest hotel is located within easy walking distance and is also adjacent to Metro Center (subway)...Grand Hyatt Washington

There are also many, many other choices, but this is a start... ;)
Thank you sir - I'll check that one out...........;)

Oooops...looks to be sold out for that time period...click on choices on my previous post... :)
It seems to be busy around then? Any reason? Flights back to Ireland are sold ou out of Washington around then too.............
I assume Pennyslvania Avenue isn't the worst street in town to stay on? :D

Doesn't someone else have a big house there? :p :D
Save room for the Godiva Chocolate Cheeseceke - the stuff tastes like Chocolate Mousse. Unbelievable.

BTW, the Air & Space Museum just opened an annex out near Dullis Airport. There's a shuttle bus service to take you out there right from the main museum on the Mall or you can drive out there (though it's pretty far). Admission is free but parking is $12.00. They added the new facility because they didn't have room at the downtown museum. Examples of the aircraft on display at the annex are the Space Shuttle Enterprise, the Concorde, the Enola Gay, the first prototype Boing 707 and tons of fighters and assorted early aircraft. Also worth the trip.
I think avoiding 9/11 is smart, bound to be a lot of security issues then.
