Paceman Cooper S - Engine off and stood overnight but can smell petrol in cabin

From Thursday evening I have been smelling petrol from inside my car before switching the engine on. The car had been stood still for around 7 hours. I had thought at first that I must have walked fuel in to my car as had filled up the night before. But then smelt it again first thing Friday morning. Nothing Friday afternoon or Saturday but then back again Sunday and today.
I have checked the fuel cap and this appears to be correctly on and there is no obvious markings on the ground. When the engine is running you cannot smell it any more.
Can anyone offer any obvious things to check before I book in to the garage please?
