Hi guys,

I have a problem with my "new" MINI Cooper Diesel ALL4 Countryman 1.6 manual 2012.

When the engine speed is <2000 rpm the performance of the engine is very poor.

During the hill start, I can't run slow, the engine seems doesn't have the strength to push my car when the rpm is <2000.

To make a hill start I need to use a lot the clutch (with classical stink).

When the hill is heavy it is a problem.

What do you think about it?

any of the below
egr valve suck partially open enough to bleed off boost from turbo but not enough to throw a eml lights,
timing chain stretched running all wrong from if,very common
turbo vnt sticking,
fuel system problem
most common on those n47 diesels aroun 70-100k is the timing chain, but egr valve runs right up there, and dpf filter semi blocked if car is over 75000 miles on it filter that would be my first job replace or professionally cleaned out, you will need a diagnostic run to first off read whats doing what with egr and dpf filter etc then if or egr both need to be programmed in the ecu on the car, autocom cdp plus will do that look on ebay £35 ish well worth the coins, cannont even begin to know what is doing what without it,
i would get it fixed pretty soon as clutch will not take that kind of beating for long, if clutch does fail only a fool would not change the timing chain while gearbox or engine is out on anything past 50k as its a massive job on them and its their weakness timing chains,

My car has 53000 miles.

I orders a OBD2 Bluetooth 4.0, Kimood 2018 yesterday on Amazon and tomorrow I will get it. The autocom cdp plus will be better? I can order it.

Maybe could be the dpf. The radiator fan is running when I turn off my car 80% of the time.

I hope I can fix this problem.

fact fan running it tells me there are faults logged in ecu normally, P-codes are dealer only not many diagnostics will read these as dealer only, the autocom will for sure and will allow you to do live date runs and read dpf filter and turbo boost and egr valve ie if working also will show percentage or how much soot is in it, will also allow forced regen of filter. if no codes then will be dpf half blocked and car is trying to force a regen more likely, but before you go take it for a 20 miles at 3k and over revs run you need to know its not anything else as could damage the engine by forcing a regen on say a car with other issues,,

Update:

Next Monday I will go to the repair shop. Based on the "sound" suggestion of my mechanic could be the VNT of the turbo. Hi will perform a complete ecu diagnosis and I will let you know.

The previous owner did not change the air filter for a long time. Two weeks ago I made complete services and the air filter was full of dust. Maybe this could be a problem for the turbo.

get him to check dpf filter pressures pre and post he will know what that means as blocked dpf from short journeys will make it feel like vnt of turbo the turbo's on those are fairly good tend not to fail much before 100k, if last own failed to service car correctly then worth having chain ie timing checked as well to be on safe side

First diagnosis:

all the 4 Glow Plugs doesn't work

really low air mass

small oil trace on the motor.

What do you think?

Tomorrow he will make a road test with the OBD tester

glow plugs are not just for starting these new engines from cold they also help with controlling emissions while running so the can run richer fuel loads trouble is when they stop working the diesel turns to soot this soot blocks the particulate filter and the egr valve and the vnt within the turbo and prevents engine from breathing thats what i think you have going by that.. also the glow plugs have given a fault code within the ecu so ecu you prevent any regens of the exhaust system that will also have a massive impact on how it drives

why this error is not visible on the instrument gear?

I did not see any kind of lamp. Mystery.

if dpf filter then its due to the ecu has been programmed by the factory to keep running as long as possible and not to throw a eml to go in to restricted use ie limp mode as just before a healthy dpf is regen'd its a good 80% full of soot carbons after the regn its all gone back to free flow again until next time, but if dont clear its self it just gets slower and slower until finally will get dpf light on dash,, the trouble is a vnt turbo was never really designed to work with a filter in exhaust backing up carbon in to its nozzles so this reduces its boost by not spinning the shaft inside fast enough because its working against a high pressure around the exhaust side of the impeller,, also the egr valves can get stuck slightly ope or the seat it sits in will leak due to carbon build up from back pressure from a partially blocked dpf filter and also bleed pressure away, the whole system must be treated as one part of the car when cleaning repairing as all parts must work together to keep each other working correctly as such, this i believe is the knee jerk reactions the car makers were forced to do when all the governments decided that cars are the reason for most of the pollution,,, hmm but still thousands of planes and ships run around with no restrictions pretty much. but hayho we are where we are and joys of diesels, i own a diesel always have but they come with some must do jobs mileage related to stay healthy , ie filter change/75k additive refill if have one /45k once a week a 3000 revs run for 20 miles to kick the passive regen going on a healthy system ie without any fault codes,, even a faulty glow plug will block it all up,, this all comes form someone who has done a number of courses on these systems over the years,,, if were we have filter gone must keep the same locking exhaust any welds must be hidden or lock like factory ones and have egr gone at same time need ecu remapping to do map out, watch mpg go up by 10mpg on most things, can drive around at 1500 revs for the rest of ots life and will not do it filter and wont damage the timing chain as mush as well. down side its mot failure if they find it, thats said its only a visual check and very impossible to detect if done correctly, ironic thing is after this the car will never smoke never waste diesel having to rev so high to keep its self clean,,

new, tomorrow the mechanic will change all the 4 Glow Plugs and after that, he will run a DPF regen.

could also ask him to check the lever arm on the turbo for movement, ie should be easy to move just the spring tension from actuator resistance, if free then nozzles should rotate the ring inside the turbo exhaust side if stiff then this will cause lack of power or very laggy like nothing nothing then all of it once the pressure builds enough to move the nozzles,, if is tight i use egr cleaner and remove the exhaust cat off the turbo spray in the hole and move the arm until nice a free moving, its bi-product of dpf and carbon built up between filter and turbo and very common,, hopefully a forced regen if its like it will clean it out,

News:

- he change the 4 Glow Plugs and now not error on the ecu

- the problem maybe is the DPF fileter . He tries to force the regen by ecu 4 times (during on-road drive) without success. The regen stuck on 40% each time.

must admit i dont like the way mini deal with forced regens, i done a vauxhall 2.0cdti the other day had 57.000 miles on it, i stuck a can of cataclean in it drove it around for 30 miles then forced a regen on it,, on most cars the software will make the engine rev at 3400 revs for around 40 minutes and will alter the injector timing and length of pulse of fuel as such to generate the heat while reving on the spot,, by far a better method car keep eye on it all as well, that was went back down to 20% after was on 80% before so think another 20k will need a filter change, or might just knock the bloody thing out and have it mapped out maybe, my next job on it will be oil pump off and change the oil seal on it as ddf filter when regens adds diesel in oil and destroys the seal and water downs the oil and kills the motor if keep driving with it regenning all the time, be warned its not just vauxhalls that do this trick they all do to some extent
