First try checking the fuse for the rear wiper and rear hatch.
If it doesn't open at all, simpliest thing to check if there's a cable for you to pull/yank under the rear seats to release the latch (not sure if it's the same on the countryman as R53/R56 models).
Once it's released try spraying some lubricant on the mechanism and try to open/close a few times.
If no luck could be the lock/mechanism needs replacing.
